a p4 2.4 socket 478, asus p4xp-x MB, geforce2, 512 ram (3 loop memtest passed), 350w power supply with good reading in bios and normal cpu temp, was suffering from random lock ups, it used to happen once a day or once every 2 days, the lock ups were either no mouse move, keyboard not working, or the mouse moves but doesnt do any action (no respond when clicking on icons or start or task bar) and sometimes during screen saver it locks up, 70% of time was locking up when the computer ios idle, after some period of time, the graphic card went bad (screen started going dark back and forth and sometimes doesnt go back unless restart), so changed the graphic card with xfx 6800un and softmoded to quadro 4000,

the system worked fine for 1 week and now it started locking up again sometimes twice a day.

tried different grapgic card driver with same result
virus and spyware scan showed nothing
windows was newly installed when the first problem showed up

what could be the problem?
- hard drive or its cable?
- power supply? reading is good and doubt the new graphic card have any impact on it since the problem was there before the new graphic card.
- motherboard?

unfortunately, i dont have access to other parts in order to swap, so for the time being it is more guess than practical.

thanks for your help

Check the system log (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer) and check for any warnings or errors under Application or System. Check the temps with Speedfan and see what it says. It might be a power or motherboard issue if it's randomly freezing up. You can try reseating everything just to make sure everything's connected properly.
