P4 Hyperthreading Problem

I'm using this Cooler Master RS-450-ACLY in my current setup and it's awesome. My system was a tad wonky with even the Antec TrueBlue 480 (20 pin version) that I had in there before (which powered my T-bird 900 @ 1200 and Barton 2500+ @ 2200). Tossed this in there, and things firmed up quite nicely. Price on it went up a tad, but it's still a great deal for what you're getting. Also, another nice thing about this PSU is that it has Active PFC. :-D
 
The other identical power sopply didn't help at all. This power supply has rating better than most of the 400-500W ones out there, so I really doubt it's a problem with the PS. As I said before, I'd had this one running 7 drives, a Radeon 9000 and an Athlon XP 2400 without a hitch. I fail to understand how my P4 630, a HD, 1 DVD+-RW and an FX5900XT could possibly be maxing it out.

Have nearly the same ratings. This is still one for the best 350W power supplies you can buy, and Newegg still sells it for ~$65

HUMONGOID difference. Look a little closer. Your power supply has one 12V rail at 17A (peak rating). Mine has two 12V rails, one at 18A peak (12A continuous), and one at 16A peak (10A continuous). Considering the fact that the CPU on most boards these days gets their power from the 12V rail, that's a gianormous difference of 17A (if we go apples-to-apples and compare the peak ratings of both), or essentially double.

The problem, though, is that your board only has a 20 pin connector, so you'd still only get 18A and the extra 16A is lost to you, hence why your PSU and mine would perform similarly on your board.

Considering that it's a GeForce 5900XT that you've got there, I stand my my agreement with ICE_9's opinion that you're drawing more power than your PSU has to give. Your 12V rail is gasping for air like a cop in my town chasing a donut rolling down the street. nVidia's highest end cards from the last few series have totally pushed a lot of people to bump up the specs on their PSUs.

I put a friend's BFG 6800Ultra OC AGP in my last system and had to disconnect my DVD-R to get my system to POST with it, and I had an Antec TrueBlue 480. If I left the DVD plugged in, the damn 6800 would beep at me! You can see from my sig below that I don't have a whole lot in my system, either (only the motherboard, CPU, and video changed since the 6800UltraOC incident).
 
Ok, I'm gonna try using a GF3 for awhile (only decent thing I have lying around) and see if that helps. If so, then I'll have narrowed it down to either the PS or the video card.

Seems like using a different video card eliminated the problem almost entirely. I guess I'm gonna side with a new power supply. I will post results. :)
