P4 Dual Core or Hyper Threading

Hey Everyone ...

I was just curious whats the difference between Dual Core & Hyper threading. Which performs better for gaming. Im planning on my first built, So far into mind as for Mobo the Gigabyte GA-1975 turbo. Some guy recommended the P4 dual core 930 D. Any suggestions

hyperthreading is intel's way of making one core emulate two to be able to do two things at once

dual core is basically two cpu's on one package ;)
 
Get the 930. You can overclock it to 4ghz EASILY on the stock cooler with an extremely small bump in voltage. Dual core is better in almost every case over hyperthreading.
 
Hyperthreading allows one CPU core to schedule a second thread while the first thread is waiting on data or some other slow condition. It also allows the one CPU core to make better use of available ALU and FPU computation units. This makes the one CPU you have more "efficient", but it really isn't much like having two CPUs.

A dual-core CPU has two separate CPU cores that can work at the same time. While hyperthreading tries to make better use of one full core, dual-core essentially gives you two whole processors.

The short of it is that dual-core > hyperthreading.
 
You might have trouble getting a 930 to 4 ghz with the gigabyte board. I know myself and some others can't get over 250 fsb with it.
 
Hmm... try the Asus board? At 1.4 volts, and a 266fsb I've got it to 4ghz without ANY issues :)

If I had to do it all over again, i'd have the Asus -WS, but it wasn't out in Jan. when I got my 930.

Intel 975-based Asus motherboard is the P5WD2-E. You can get it for a couple hundred bucks now. The secondary Marvell IDE controller is a bit buggy thanks to beta drivers, so if you have more than 2 IDE devices that the Intel controller has, you should consider the 955 P5WD2 Premium instead (better secondary IDE, but not as many SATA ports) or buy IDE -> SATA adapters for your hard drives.

I run XP 64 (extra stuff activates in the chip), so my voltage is 1.425 volts... but If you're running XP 32 bit, 1.4 shouldn't be an issue at 4ghz. And yes, it works fine even on the stock air cooler :) Throw a Zalman or a Blu Orb II fan (like I did) and temperature won't be an issue, even at 4.5 ghz... hehe.

Just be sure to buy really good ram (DDR2-667 at a minimum) and run it at DDR-533. Not only can you get more aggressive CAS latency timings this way, and enable Asus' "turbo" and "HyperPath 3", but at 1066 FSB (4ghz) your CPU and RAM run at a 1:1 FSB ratio, allowing optimum memory bandwidth even without all the turbo options.

But all I've pushed the 930 so far is to 4ghz, and it runs just fine (Prime95'd for hours).
 
Dual core has better performance because you have both cores btw. When you have hyperthreading, what intel and the software writers have done is made it so that your processor priortizes everything. whatever yo'ure working on now will receive more CPU power than the thing in the background, so you basically trick your OS into thinking you have 2 CPU cores when, in fact, you only have 1. Go 930. it'll clock higher, feel faster than a single core with hyperthreading... just about everything you probably would like (if you've got like the 200 dollars)

by the way, I'd also recommend the P5WD-2 Deluxe. So far, all the boards I"ve seen that have amazing overclocks (that Pentium D 955XE at 7ghz is on a P5WD-2 deluxe, and so is a 570 at 5.7ghz)
 
Hyperthreading is a software emulated second CPU, but really when you get down to it, Intel found a way to use some of the many of the unused pipeline stages in the Netburst architecture and do something productive with them.

Plus, using Hyperthreading meant that software developers needed to start making apps multi-threaded, which in turn paved the way for dual core CPU's.

not trying to argue about small details, but I wouldn't say hyperthreading is a type of emulation...it is a hardware feature of the cpu and is independant of operating system. Now of course it only works in operating systems that support multiple cpu's (hence no windows 9x support) but there is no emulation involved...all hardware. To show it, even OS's that don't officially recognize hyperthreading (windows NT and 2000) still show up as a dual-processor box, just without the specialized scheduling.

Inside a hyperthreaded cpu there are physically two decoders, two schedules, and two of all the supporting architecture to support them both (such as flagging which thread a micro-op is associated with). It is two threads even at the architecture level.
