Hey everyone, first post, long time [H] reader.

I wanted to know what some people think would be the best heatsink / fan combo for my P4 2.4B Processor (Socket 478?). I just have stock now and wanted to put something else on to overclock it a bit more then I have it now.

Also, I have various fans in the case that can be loud. Anyone have suggestions for one of those fan controller things? (Fanbus I think they are called?

It's been awhile since I looked all this stuff up and wanted a good place to start before I dove back in. Thanks!!

For a p4 heatsink your best bet is probably one of the Thermalright top of the line SLK models, or the SP-94. A quick search at newegg will bring up the best copper one, that one would be good. Another option is one of the Swiftech models. The MCX478-V is a nice big heatsink and should do the job well.

There are hundreds of fan controllers out there, it all depends on what you want. To make it easy, you can buy small potentiometers that cost a buck or two each and hook one up to each fan and control things there. If you want to spend a bit more, you can buy fan mates or temp sensors or a long list of other things. There are also units like the DigiDoc that control fans with a menu and lcd and also detect temps. So, get on a web site like www.frozencpu.com and check out what they have.

Another option is to buy some quieter fans or ones that have temp sensors so they aren't loud all the time. Vantec Stealths are quiet, as are Panaflo, Pabst, and SilenX.
 
Awesome, thanks so much for your help. I played around w/ my computer and found that the most noise is coming from my Maxtor 60gig HD. That is going to be replaced now ASAP since it's SO loud.

I think i'm going to get one of those SLK Thermalright models. Just out of curiousity, what are people's thoughts on this thing. The "CL-P0025", or SilentTower 4 from Thermaltake? I'm not going to get it. It's looks so, werid?

I ran my SLK-947U on my 2.4B for awhile before the processor went tits-up. Kept it nice and cool when I paired it with a Vantec Tornado. One word of advice if you get that combination though, make sure you have a good strong fan controller. My suggestion would be a Hardcano 12. But individual tastes vary so just make sure you get one that can handle a full amp through at least one channel.
 
I vote SP94, bvest heatpipe/copper combo around, takes 92mm fans for quietness/CFm balance.

Fan controllers are cool but I prefer to jsut use thermal controlled fans. Still get the low but the automatically rev up if you start overheating, good stuff.
