Hey guys
I would like to know which cpu you guys would say gives the best performance / overclocking potential
P4 660 3.6GHz N0 Stepping
or
PD 840 3.2GHz A0 Stepping

i have both cpus atm one is gonna go to my friend but depending on which is better for me
i have an Asus P5LD2 Deluxe Motherboard running the 660 with stock HSF
i recently bought a ThermalRight XP-90 but i got lazy and dont want to take out the board to install the RM775 unless i have to change the cpu

i overclocked the 660 to 4.2Ghz (thats the farthest i could go from stock hsf)
i even did the CPU Lock Free thing which lowers the multi to 14x and i got the cpu to 266MHz FSB which is 3.73GHz on stock voltages and hsf
i tried going higher but my ram was limiting me

so which do u guys think would be better a 660 or an 840
i play all the latest games and i have an X850XT PE atm

The 840 I don't think would overclock as well as the 660, but i'd keep the 840. I mean it's dual core which right now looks very attractive to me.

if u are just gonna give one away, then keep the 840.

if u wre gonna sell... then I'd assume he be willing to pay more for the 840, so sell him that, and OC the hell outta the 660...

if u can get the 660 to a high enough OC, then i bet it would be faster in most cases.... HT would pick up the slack for you.... dont forget, they consume way less power and generate way less heat

Both are less than stellar... Give the 660 to your friend if that is your thing, and sell the 840 on the forums. Use the cash you make and throw a little extra in to buy a Pentium D 920, massive OC potential there, a lot more than you will see from any 90 nm process 600 or 800 series chip.

so what im hearing is keep the 840 and get rid of the 660

would better cooling help? would the XP-90 i got be sufficient or do i need better?

You have both on hand. You have motherboard and even a system running on the 660 on hand.

I would drop the 840 in there and see for yourself.

I would expect game performance to drop, but have nicer multitasking between applications.

right now i am running the 660 at stock speeds with the stock cooler
i will install the 840 over the weekend as i have to take out the mobo for installing the XP-90
i do not understand what u guys were talking about when u say neither sell the cpu's and get 920 or 930
do u mean sell both cpu's and get 2 920's or 930's

well i tested the 660 and it goes to a max of 4.2 (18*233) or (14*299) i just have to lower the memory ratio from 1:1 to 5:4 for the higher fsb as i have 266MHz DDR2

i havnt tried the 840 yet as i was lazy to install the XP-90 since it requires to take out the board and install the RM775
