P4 660 Info

I didn't see this posted, so here it is:

Guru3d has some info on the P4 660 with the differences between it and the P4 560.

If these numbers are accurate and it costs $600, I'm dissapointed. I don't see the point of this release other than it has 64bit capability. Maybe it runs a bit cooler, but still. For something referred to as a "Performance" processor, it doesn't seem to be much of a gain.

I don't know what to go with now. I was holding out on this or the dual core release, but I doubt I'll get the performance I was expecting. I may have to just settle on a dual Opteron or Xeon setup.
 
Oh, <10% increases in synthetic benchmarks for $600! At least it encodes video faster than the 560.

Well, thats really typical Intel. The price will drop down quick I think when AMD counters with their new crop of procs. that also reminds me altho the prescott has 512mb more catche but it's no faster than the northwood...
 
meh, I think these things will actually work quite well as replacements to the 5xx line.....but not as upgrades. But you never know until you get one, they might OC really nicely

Sorry....um....that was a mistake....I was trying to say 512K...a proc with 512mb of catche would be craze? well, you never know ... maybe someday, all ram will be intergrated into the proc as cache...peace...

Which one of you guys is going to buy the top speed grade on a brand new processor line? :rolleyes: That's like complaining about the pricing of the P4 570 when most of you buy the 530/540 and overclock anyways.

Sorry if this is old news, but as of the time stamp of this post, I've seen 3 6xx series P4's in stock at ZipZoomFly, fastest they had was a 650 for $435.00.

Two questions, not just for you, but others thinking alone these same lines.

1. Expesive compare to what AMD processor?

2. You do you think the overpriced (IMHO) hammers will get cheaper when they move them to dual core? And why?

This kind of thinking flies in the face of common sense. The top of the line AthonFX costs $850 and you guys whine about $600, expect the 3.6 to seel closer to $439 more ship. This price will fall even more as the Dual Core models ship next quarter (Not 2006 LOL!)

While everybody is looking at the high-end 660, why hasn't anyone noticed the value-leader 630?

The 630 will price out *cheaper* than the just-shipping 530, and includes features more akin to the J series (except that the 630 supports EM64T *and* EIST/Enhanced SpeedStep, which the J series does not; otherwise, it supports all the features of the J series).

The only real quibble with the 630 is that one of the chipsets that will support it (the 945 Express) hasn't shipped yet, and I have no idea when it will ship; otherwise, you have to use it with the high-end 925X/925XE chipsets (the current 915 series chipset does not support the 6xx series processors).

However, the 6xx series will have features the Js lack (while the only feature the Js have that the 6xx also has is the No-Execute support; the Js don't support either EM64T or Enhanced SpeedStep, while the 6xx series supports both).

If you *don't* overclock, the 6xx, even at $20 more than the same-speed J, could actually be a *bargain* because of OS versatility alone (however, if you have or plan on buying a mobo with a 915 or 8xx chipset and LGA775, than your *only* upgrade path is to the J).

However, if you have a Northwood that *doesn't* support HT and are looking to upgrade to LGA775, than you may prefer the 6xx series over any J series.

I'm actually looking at the 630 and 640 as alternatives to the middle and higher-end J series in the middle-end desktop market, since the delta for increased processor speeds with Prescott doesn't match that for Northwood.
 
Are the 945 and 955 motherboards slated to come out at the same time as the 600 series? I'm looking to purchase a rig with a 600 series processor, but i want the 955x chipset motherboard because I will more than likely upgrade to dual core some time in the future, and the 925xe does not offer me that path.

It won't be an increase of $20, it'll be much more, depending on which chip you're talking about. ZZF has the chips back up on their site.

Intel won't be putting an on-board memory controller on desktop or mobile chips for a while, definitely not within the next 1.5 years.

The Yonah (dual core Pentium-M) has already been shown in December as working silicon. One odd thing about Yonah is that both cores (in laptops at least) won't be running at the same time most of the time. Intel is doing that to keep the chip cool. Too bad it's still several months away anyways (dual core schedules were moved up from Q4'05/Q1'06).
 
Stupid question, I know...

Will those 64-bit chips fit in a standard socket? Will it require a BIOS update? I am surprised that [H] hasn't said shit about them.

Considering I see adds for them all over this site, I would expect them to say SOMETHING... :)

Nothing is needed other than a BIOS update.
 
They need a BIOS update and must be used in the i925X and i925XE chipsets. The i915 series isn't supported.
 
I read the techreport review. Well damn, the benchmarks that mattered to me the most (not gaming) put the AMD in first most of the time.

I guess I'll build another AMD system with dual Opterons.
 
Just bought the Asus p5p800 775 board and have been waiting for a chance to mount a processor onto it...will definitely go with the 640 due to the thermal monitoring provided and let the AI NOS handle the overclocking thru the FSB . Am also running dual channel overclocking ultra ram. Quite an upgrade from a P3 933 which is what am using now. If need to upgrade and going intel the extra 70 bucks for thermal control is worth it
 
ON another note asus had the bios update for the new cpu on thier site day after release..can see why chose asus

Incorrect. The 915P series works fine with the new 6xx chips. I don't know where that misconception originated.

Gigabyte released BIOS updates for all their 915P boards that support the new 6xx chips.

Newegg is also offering specials when you purchase a 6xx chip with a 915P Gigabyte motherboard.

i think this cpu is great! if you look at some benchmarks, it performs the same as the 3.46EE. but for $400 bucks less.

Actually the reason processors have cache is to compensate for slower system ram. Once system ram is fast enough proc's won't need cache. This will make proc's cheaper to produce and more efficient. :D

Still, the 6xx series (yes, at the numbers you quote from ZZF), considering the additional features (Enhanced SpeedStep, EM64T) over the J is comparably priced (only with the 650/660 are the prices way too tall, but then again, there are no 550J/560J models for the 6xx to compete with). The 630 is $24 more than the 540J; however, the 640 is only $18 more than the 550 (no J model exists). As I've stated already, the performance deltas for Prescott in no way match those for Northwood; how evenly do the performance deltas for the J series and the 6xx series compare (not only with each other, but with the original Prescotts)?

And, as I just pointed out, there is no 550J whatsoever. So far, the 640 performs comparably to the 550, yet is only $18 more. Unless you're a college student, why sweat $18? And if you are, what's wrong with both additional protection (No Execute, Enhanced SpeedStep) and OS versatility (EM64T) for $18 more?
 
PGHammer is quite correct. For the miniscule price difference you're buying future capabilities as well. What if you decide you want to move to a 64 bit OS, for example?
