I recently built myself a system and ever since I have been having problems with lock-ups. It was really bad before, and then I swapped out the memory twice (second gig set was as bad as the first) and now it has a lot less problems. It will still occasionaly have issues though. I have had a couple times where I am playing UT2004 at full everything, 1680x1050, encoding a DVD, or various other things where the system will just freeze. It's much less common now (I can usually play UT with no problems, etc.). I have thought maybe the cpu is overheating since it has the stock cooler, but temps seem to be 65-70 when I check in bios (after reboot). This is hot, but it shouldn't be overwhelming. I also only have two 80mm fans in the case (one in and one out) but it shouldn't be too bad. The system is as follows:

Intel 925XE
512mb DDR2 (Garbage Centon being replaced by OCZ this week)
ATI X800XL 256

Does it seem like it's overheating or am I looking at another issue with the motherboard, proc, or memory?
 
70c is thermal throttling time, which would explain the freezing as your CPU goes under 1GHZ with all that shit open. After 75-80c your CPU just shuts itself, and possibly the system off.

This could be a power supply issue. Make sure you have generic 450w with 22A on the +12v rail or higher. OR a good quality PSU like antec, enermax, OCZ, PCP&C, etc...

Also try running memtest86 on the RAM to test for any and all errors, you should run this test with all new ram you buy.

And third, after every piece of new hardware less RAM and storage drives, personally i ALWAYS reformat my main drive, ALWAYS. its the only surefire way to start with a clean slate and make sure there are no driver conflicts.
 
Hardrives have been reformatted. Power supply is an Antec Neopower. I havn't run memtest86, but I ran the MS memory tester on all the memory. Maybe I will get 2 more case fans and a zalman hsf, I dunno.
 
Ya the stock coolers that come with any CPU sucks ass, always good to upgrade it. Windows memory tester sucks, memtest 86 is dos-based and is a superb way to see if its your ram. it is possible to get two sets of fubar'd ram, bad luck.
 
I ran Memtest86 3 or 4 times and it ran fine. Thinking the cpu is probobly overheating. That seems more likely than something being perminately fubared with the cpu or mobo right?
 
Ok so I just had my computer lock up completely trice while playing music in iTunes. Seems a bit fishy. I also ran a burn in test on it and could not get it to crash. I was starting to think my graphics card was the culprit, but now with the audio problems I'm not even sure. I'm using the onboard sound for my board.
 
Yeah, I have to say it really seems like a heat issue, when it shuts off do you get a BSOD or does it just bail on you? If you get a BSOD(Blue Screen Of Death), than it is most likely Ram or Motherboard related, if the system just dies on you its probably overheating or a defective processor (very rare but it does happen).
 
It just locks up, it doesn't even restart most times, it just locks up the image on the screen and i have to hold down the power button.
