not really in fact the northwood version of every cpu is faster than its prescott brother (3.0c>3.0e...3.2c>3.2e...etc)
 
If you are set on getting the 3.4, then what would you sell that 3.0 for? PM me for price.

Unless you get those crappy Prescott "A" series CPU's that have the wimpy 533MHz bus, they are the same.

Alot of people dog the Prescott core, and while it does have it's issues (mainly heat) it is a good core and easily outdoes Northwood's in the overclockability department. Prescott scales well with clock speed increases. A Northwood @3.8 has little or no chance to beat a Prescott I had a 3.0C and a 3.0E and both benched identical at 3.43GHz in the same system. They benched about the same in every benchmark software I could run on them. within a couple % points of each other. After 3.6GHz or so Prescott takes the lead.

Prescott can be a great processor, you just have to be preppared to handle the heat.
 
Not sure what you were using to bench it but if your benchmark only measures CPU interger performance, then yes, clock for clock they will look almost identical. The NW blows the presscott away in floating-point tests though. As for overclockability, that's always a luck of the draw because my NW OC's 800MHZ but my Presscott only goes 700MHZ OC stable.
 
and only people with phase change can really begin to explore the limits of prescott, whereas the northwood only needed about 1kg of solid copper and a big ass fan to get there...
