P4 2.8C cooling problems

my current setup is a P4 2.8C on an abit IC7-G max 2 advance in a Thermaltake Xaser 3 Case

i also have:
Radeon 9800 pro 128mb
2x 80GB WD SATA drives in RAID 0
2 sticks of generic (i think samsung) 256 mb (not sure on speed)
front mounted USB 2.0 (in 3.5" bay)
modem
USB 2.0 PCI card (for the front mounted USB, the MOBOs are on the top of the case)
Sony DRU-510 DVD Writer

my problem is that even with my seven case fans, northbridge heatsink and fan and stock P4 fan, my CPU temp is still 43 degrees C at IDLE!!

I the problem my wiring in the case, ( i didn't tie down All wires, mainly my fan wires are all over the case)

this is really hot to me, and when playing far cry, my temp can get up to 56-58 degrees. the system temp is always between 28-33 degrees. my temp sensor is in the middle of the case and the bios reports the same system temp.

Please Help ME!!!!!!!
 
Are you sure you don't have a 2.8E? because the temps you listed are almost exactly what my 2.8 prescott gives off.

I'm thinking it's possible you have too many fans pumping air in different directions, disrupting a steady airflow, or maybe all your fans are set for exhaust.

In my experience, having a case with good airflow should only really require 2 casefans. 3 maximum. an intake at the front bottom of the case, an exhaust at the back top of the case, right underneath the powersupply. the 3rd fan, and intake on the side of the case directly above the processor, is optional, but I've seen it decrease processor temps in some cases up to 5 degrees at load.

I've also heard that having positive pressure can help keep overall case temp down. that's where your incoming CFM > outgoing CFM, but I've never tried otherwise so I'm not sure how positive pressure would compare to neutral or negative pressure.

No matter how many fans you got, if the temperature of your room is too warm, your CPU will become warm as well. Turn on the AC in your room if you got it and you'll see the temp drop significantly. Remember, it's summer time.

Excellent point. A lower ambient will do as much or more to help any cooling as bundles of new fans will.

And I get similar temps in the summer with my 2.8B @ 3.06 w/ an oc'ed 5900xt. But the ambient in the room is usually close to 80 F cuz its an old house and the AC doesnt work so well.

To help my problem I just recently added an 80mm top blowhole, a 120mm side intake, cut out some of the fan grills on the case and redid my wiring to improve airflow. I'll check my temps and see how much this helps.
 
are you complaning that the stock heatsink sucks? P4's arent exactly the coolest-running processors, be thankful its stable with your shoddy cooling (more case fans = worse airflow, ALWAYS) and stock heatsink its working as well as it does.
 
the ic7's report temp 8-12C higher than actual. so your temps of 56-58 are probobly closer to 48-52c give or take, those are normal temps for the stock cooler.
 
People on message boards are always saying that IC7's sensors report temps as too high, or that asus boards report temps 5-10 C lower than actual, but I've never seen this written anywhere reputable. Is this even remotely true?

On a Pentium 4, isn't the temperature censor on the processor itself? If so, how can How does this work? It simply doesn't make sense to me that a temperature reading for the exact same processor at full load on a similar setup can vary ~20C in reading from one motherboard to the next.

Can someone point me out some links that perhaps have some sort of method for for determining this(aside from laser thermometers focused directly on the processor die), or any link at all proving (or at least stating) that current motherboard/cpu sensors are so inaccurate?

I have no idea what you just said, except that somehow you came out with "more fans = worse airflow" which is straight bs. And stock p4 hsf's often perform as well or better than most after-market ones.
 
More than 3 case fans do in most instances do result in worse airflow. It's possible that the OP's setup is optimal and that no fan is interfering with another, but i'm betting that with 7 fans, there is some air pathway problems, or at least a couple fans that are only making his PS work a bit harder than it has to.

p4's shutdown at 70C, when i was using the stock cooling i was getting temperature readings close to 80C and it was still running. from my personal experience with my system, my temp readings are 8-12C higher than actual
 
if you look at the thermaltake case, it is a full tower server.
i have 1 on top blowing down, 2 in front blowing across my hard drives, 2 on the side blowing on the pci ports, and 2 exhaust. the fans are all stock and i think thermaltake knows what they are doing. no offense. as i said the temp in the room stays around 30 degrees C or even lower and that is the reported ambitient temp inside the case. this leaves it to be the heatsink or thermal pad. in response to the question of my processor being a 2.8E, it is not. i ordered the northwood because the prescott was new and i heard it isn't as fast clock for clock.

i also have overclocked to 3.08 w/o any temp change at all. (not now though)
3.2 showed a 3 degree temp change and i immediatily brought it back down, but i was stable.

the temps i show i get from hardware doctor... high temps i play far cry and get into a big firefight then alt tab to HardDoc.
