P4 2.8 700+RAM Slow???

Hi, my question is my dad got a dell p4 2.8GHz with 700+ RAM. This thing should fling around right...not here. His comp takes about 2min just to load word or help. I don't understand why it would be so slow. What could we do to fix it? (it does have many things hooked up to it for dsl)

it could be that

a) dell gave you a slow HDD

b) dell preinstalled lots of crap that's chewing up system resources

c) somehow your HDD isn't running in DMA mode

check the cpu usage while loading the programs. even when not loading them, it could be a virus

It could just be an OS that is corrupted to shit. Your problem is so vague that it leaves it open to be a million things. Is it a Celeron? And what do you mean by 700 ram, 700megabytes?

u mean 768mb of ram (512+256)? i dont see dell putting non-matching pairs of ram in a computer. was the computer custom built from their website maybe? run MSCONFIG and disable all the preinstalled crap on the computer from starting up. than see how it works.
