my friends got a p4 1.4ghz processor he needs a new mo-bo, what kind should he buy that will support his chip. i was looking at a asus p4p800 mo-bo. Though most of you would say to buy a new cpu hes kinda pressed for cash at the moment so...... neeed an oppinion of a pentium user, since i use amd. thx

Actually, your 1.4GHz P4 may be either a Socket 423 CPU or a Socket 478 CPU, according to Intel. If that CPU is a large-size socket type, it is a Socket 423 model, which will not fit any newer motherboards at all whatsoever. That P4 will have to be of the small-socket (Socket 478) type in order to even have a chance of working on a newer P4 motherboard.

If its less than an inch long its a Socket 478, if its larger, with pins around the core in the middle, its a Socket 423.

I used a Via P4X266 for my 423, but after about 2 years of use it blew a hole in my RAM, leaving the whole system.....dead.

I hear a lot of people like the Abit TH7 I think it is. Although that uses Rambus, and you might not have any.

If its a Socket 478... I bought my P4P800 from Newegg, as a refurb for $50 and love it. I recommend it.

ewww, a P4 1.4 no matter what socket is god aweful slow...

That being said I would hope that its a 478, that way he can at least become mobo ready for like a 2.4C or something when he gets the $$$.

he'll need a new motherboard, cpu, and ram. id get an abit ic7, 2.4c, and some nice fast ram for overclocking. mine did 3.3 on stock cooling/voltage.

That's like 4 years old. Not really worth getting a mobo for unless you can find a cheap used one. I guess I'd do that since he's pressed for cash. First find out what kind of chip it is- 423 or 478. I'm gonna guess 423, so you'll probably end up eBaying for it.

That thing's probably got Rambus memory, which isn't going to work in any modern board. You'd probably be best off getting a whole new CPU/Mobo/RAM setup (besides, you can't even be sure that his CPU/RAM are good or if they died with the mobo).

Look around for good deals - you could pull a passable setup for $150ish & probably get a faster rig than what he's got right now.

New mobo, new processor nforce 2 and AMD XP 2800+ or 3200+

That is if his computer will accept it.
