P2P on Wifi

Is it normal to for P2P to slow 802.11g with WPA2 significantly? I notice when one of the clients on the network uses P2P, all the Wifi clients are slowed significantly out to Internet but the wired clients are not affected. This network uses a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 with DDWRT on it. The modem is a 2-Wire something or other from AT&T circa 2003ish.

On another network, I have the same P2P application running on fast ethernet but it doesn't cause any similar issues. This network uses WRT300N and a FE switch connected between the client ant the router. Modem is Motorola 2210.

I think the application is configured identical since I can't read the menus and used the defaults to set everything up.

The P2P application is called PPStream and as far as I can tell it's a P2P application. It's used to stream movies and TV shows.
 
Wireless bandwidth is shared amongst all the clients unless you have multiple radios or one that supports MIMO and as such is responsible for the slowdowns when you have heavy wireless traffic. Wifi is unfortunately quite slow and I wouldn't use it on anything but say a laptop or mobile device for simple web access. Running a wired connection will alleviate your issues as you have found out and is the best suggestion I can give.
 
I am familiar with the hub-like nature of a Wifi network. I'm running plain-old 802.11g, so no MIMO or anything like that. MIMO uses multiple channels correct? 2 of the 3 clients have 802.11n PCI adapters -- would upgrading the 3rd to n along with the WAP help to alleviate this issue? I think I have 150Mbps 802.11n NICs.

The reason I asked about P2P specifically is because I noticed that my slow downs mainly occur when PPStream is used over Wifi. For anything else, the Wifi is fine.

I can stream Hulu and Southpark just fine over Wifi without majorly affecting other users, but PPS which is 500Kbps and under has a disproportionate impact. I think Hulu has about the same bandwidth requirements and Southpark HD has even higher requirements.

Wiring the structure isn't a feasible task. There is no attic, crawl space, or unfinished basement where I can run the wires. I do understand where you're going with this though. Even FE seems slow sometimes considering that some parts of my LAN are GigE. Large data transfer over Wifi is unbearable.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is: Does P2P generally have a disproportionate impact on the network? The application really only needs 500Kbps down to stream the video but it seems like it's saturating the 802.11g Wifi net.
 
im not familiar with ppstream, but regular peer to peer programs like torrents and things use many dozens of connections to different peers, instead of just one or two connections that Hulu would use. the amount of bandwidth is lower, but the number of concurrent connections is many times higher, which wireless has its limits on handling.

some installations of ddwrt on routers like yours with not too much memory can cause issues like this as well. with lots of connections, the router cant process it all and gets bogged down.
