I keep reading a whole lot about the Intel mobile processors and not so much about the AMD mobiles. I'm looking to put together a computer for not a whole lot of cash (~1000) and I'm trying to figure out what CPU to base it on. I was thinking at the moment I'd go for a low-voltage Centrino, but I'm always open to cheaper cpu's from AMD. I can't however seem to find a decent comparison of the two.

Also, does anyone know of anywhere I can get mobile hardware that's not in a laptop? Or even a cheap laptop that I could hack up and modify for my purposes?

well, so far most the laptops ive seen with amd 64 processors are more often more expensive than low level Ms

im not looking for an athlon 64. im looking for something thats going to be the rough equivalent in processing power as maybe a 1ghz p3. this has to run something thats been running happily on a very weak computer, and nothing more.

Both Pentium M or Celeron D have the processing power of the P3, but drain much less battery life... if you want cheap, I suggest dell because www.fatwallet.com ALWAYS has some type of crazy coupon running for Dell

or check ebay for an older version of an IBM laptop or something based on the P3-M architecture...I still use a laptop with a P3-M running at 1.13GHz and it runs everything in windows XP excellent (except for most new games, though I can still run UT2004 demo at 800x600 just fine)

if you want something with the power of a 1ghz p3, get the thinkpad T23.

its awesome. i love mine.

(ebay is your place)

T23's are selling on ebay for $500 shipped (over 20 completed within $30 of $500)
p3 1.13, 10-30gb hd, 256mb ram

cost of new battery $50 (as a second battery)
cost of IBM pcmcia A/B/G card $30-50
cost of 512mb ram $100 (push system up to 768)
cost of new 40gb 7.2k HD $130

comes out to be a dam good system

the 60gb 7k2 is only 145 bucks at GameVE, so the 40 is pretty worthless unless your system doesnt support 60GB. the T23 supports 60GB :D

Thanks for the responses guys. Unfortunately for the project I'm working on, I need to be able to buy the exact same computer again later, and I can't shop on ebay. I've been looking at Dell (the Inspiron 2200 or whatever their lowest-end Inspiron is) and it looks promising, but I'm certainly open to other ideas, considering I plan on hacking this up quite a bit after I get it.

the low end inspirions are built really poorly IMO

they are big, bulky, and made of cheap plastic, and you can tell they made it bigger than they had too, there seems to be more than enough space in there

just a warning

Consider picking up this ACER TRAVELMATE 2304LCI PENTIUM M 1.3GHZ / 256MB / 40GB HDD / 15" XGA / DVD-ROM/CD-RW / XP HOME / 802.11BG WIRELESS
