What's with so many products having overly bright and distracting LED lights?

NEC PA271W - has a bright blue LED, which thankfully can be disabled in the options
Fractal Design Define Mini - bright blue power LED, which I had to disconnect from the motherboard
Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 - green LED, had to open up the satellite and bend the LED backwards, then cover up the opening with black tape from the inside

These little lights in my peripheral vision are just annoyances, and I've disabled all of them. Please, just stop it.

Since LEDs cost so little and use very little electricity, I doubt they're going anywhere anytime soon so get used to modding your stuff to disable them.

This is one area where I have to applaud Apple. They do not have a single distracting LED light on any of their hardware when powered up.

I concur. My Netgear router has a big bright blue LED that flashes if WiFi is enabled. Not even in use, just on. So unnecessary.

While probably not a great idea w/ circuit boards.. I have found that a tiny bit of foil works wonders in blocking 100% of light :) Used it on my Microsoft HD Cinema cameras.

I just wrap the sucker in electrical tape. It gives the same effect as if you frosted the LED bulb (like manufacturers USED to do), without obstructing it entirely.

That said, if I don't need the indicator, it gets totally obstructed.

And don't even get me started on those amped-up LED tail lamps (also often lacking frosting). I have to avert my eyes anytime someone rides their brakes, and what the fuck good is that for safety?

I absolutely despise LED lighting on desktop systems. The first thing I look at when buying a new chassis or fans is if they have LED lighting.
