Overlocking with a Q6600..

Hey! Yes, I read the other threads on this but thats why Im perplexed. I have never Overclocked before, but with my new machine I wanted to try. I have excellent temperatures on the stock sink/fan that came with my Q660. So I decided to OC it (I did get a SLACR/G0 stepping)

I went into the bios, the multi was on 9x (My mobo is a GA-EX38-DS4) So I set the FSB to 333, to bump it from 2.4 to 3.0. Nothing. Machine wouldnt start, so, luckily my bios auto-reset (A neat feature, by the way) I discovered that no matter what I set the FSB to, I cannot boot. Everything else was default, however I set my memory to auto instead of by SPD.

Any ideas?

You'll need to manually set your memory timings and divider. Might need to increase MCH, FSB and vCore voltages a little as well. Also make sure to manually set your memory voltage to within the manufacturers specs.

Some more details about your system would be helpful. First thing I would do is look at the RAM and check what dividers/timing/volts they're set at. I would go for a 1:1 divider to start and loosen your timings to 6-6-6-18, keeping them at stock volts (whatever it is for your particular RAM. MCH voltage may or may not be needed depending on the RAM set-up you're using. You can also try manually setting vCore to see if that makes a difference or not. One last thing to do as well is to set the PCI-e slot to 100Mhz so the motherboard doesn't try to up the speed. What are the full specs on your system?

Two things you have to do.

1. Check what voltage your RAM is rated at. If it was 2.0, it may very well have been booting at 1.8 volts when your ram was severly underclocked like it is out of the box coupled with the Q6600. It is underclocked to 533 mhz from it's stock of 800mhz.

So make your RAM voltage correct in the CMOS for it's intended rating.

2. Check your Memory dividers. It should be 1:1. At 3.0ghz you will be running at 666mhz FSB. Some people chose to run the ram at 1:2 which makes it run at 800mhz FSB but you'll actually slow your PC down. I've done benchmarks at both with my setup and 1:2 is actually a few percentage points slower in benchmarks because not everything is synchronous. 1:1 has always been the preferred setting for general PC overclocking.

So ensure your RAM divider is set to 1:1

You should not need to increase any voltage outside of RAM for a 3.0ghz O/C, at least that has been my exp. and that of my friends. Worst case you can increase VTT one step, MCH on step, perhaps CPU one step....That should EASILY get you to 3.0ghz stable.

Ram divider couldn't be 1:2 or it'd be 667 -> 1333 not 800. Maybe you mean 5:6?
