I have my X6800 @ 3.0GHz and idles around 36c, but when I run orthos it goes up to 65~+c then the computer shuts down. This is a mild OC and it happened ever since I got the Zalman 9700. Any tips on what I should do?
 
I take it you've tried reseating and making sure its on tight? If so the next step might be to lap your heatsink base (if you haven't already), I would normally recommend lapping the IHS too but I don't think you want to void your warranty on a ~$1000 processor :eek:.

If none of those work then I would think about another heatsink, I suppose its possible to get a "bad" Zalman 9700 so maybe think about RMAing that, before you think about lapping it of course! :D
 
Does your motherboard have a setting for automatic shut off at X temperature?

Turn that off if so. Isn't Tmax 85'C?
 
Tjunction max is 85C, and it appears that what we are talking about here.

65C is getting a little warm but far from a problem, the Tcase temp will be about 52C ish if you use your motherboard monitoring software to confirm that.


Set the Bios to 75C which is probably Tjunction

People in these forums constantly make statements like "65C is way hot dude, mine runs at 52C bla bla you must have a bad fan or not seated!" not realiseing one person is talking Tcase and the other Tjunction, so effectively both temps are about the same.

I run my e6300 @ 3 gig and have done so for around a year, now without a single problem. Tjunction temps are around 60C(47C Tacase ish) in high end gaming in Winter to about 70C(57 Tcase ish) in Summer on the bog standard Intel fan that is actually not bad.

Ahhh wrong.... All quads Tjunction max = 100 C, besides, if your Quad is B2 stepping;65 degree is a bit too hot, personally i would not go over 60 degree loaded. Also, you might need to increase some Northbridge and southbridge Voltages.

Ah wrong a X6800 is a Core 2 Duo not a quad core :) What are you bleeting on about?

Intel Set thermal shutdown at 85C B2 stepping Tjunction to protect the Conroe cores. Intel would not set the thermal shutdown way above the damage point (pretty obvious)

I am not suggesting its safe to run Conroe at 83C Tjunction for huge amounts of time, I am suggest 70C Tjunction is 100% safe and allows plenty of overhead..
