I believe my cpu has been overheating. After several hours of gaming my computer reboots and eventually wont start until I let it sit for a while. Im looking to change my cpu fan and was wondering what would be a good choice for a p4 2.4 Msi 865PE Neo2-ls agp8x w/sata.

I have tried mem test and the vid card appears to work fine in other systems.
Thanks for any input.

If it is an overheating issue than you shouldn't need to replace the whole CPU, rather just get a different heatsink with some Arctic Silver 5 paste and replace the HS. It will cost a bunch less.

However, if you want to replace the processor. Any processor that is labeled Socket 478 will work with your motherboard.

Also, funny thing I noticed on the MSI website...shows they don't know a whole bunch lol...

MSI website said:
*Note: While using DDR333 with 800MHz FSB the memory will run at 320MHz.

I dont want to replace the cpu, was just thinking of replacing the fan and heatsink. Thanks for the infor on the heatsink

Ok ordered new fan/HS with Artic 5. Ran my computer last night for a while gaming, computer did its shut down around the 3rd hour. I waited a bit and was able to get into my bios which showed my cpu temp at 55c. I figure it was breaking 60c at max load due to my gaming. What is a good tempt for a p4 2.4 Msi 865PE Neo2-ls agp8x w/sata. with a 120 gig seagate hd. 7600gt agp vid card.

I am gonna get a Scythe Ninja for my processor (same socket as yours). You can either have it fanless or with a slow spinning 120mm fan. It costs around $40. Check out this Sticky. It explains the good heatskins for the P4's with socket 478, like yours and mine.

So I have my new fan and hs due to arrive today. Thinking, hope this fixes my problem. I stop by my friends house and we get talking about my rebooting problem. His 10 year old nephew out of the blue says "take the side off your case next time it reboots, if it works no problem then you have a heat problem and possibly air circulation problem. So I do just that and go figure, no reboots now. Now I am really looking forward to putting in that new fan/hs with a5. already made sure the air flow should be good.

Kids just keep getting smarter and smarter with each generation...I remember that when I was 10 I was still just roaming the drainage tunnels around my neighbor hood "exploring" lol.
