Overheating PSU?

Hello,

For the past month i have been having problems with my computer randomly rebooting or just shutting down during extended hours of play.

at first I thought it was my video card, ATI tools and speed fan reported the card at about 64c during heavy load, (radeon x850xt) fan seems to be working good, opened the case and completly cleaned everything, removed alot of dust from the video cards heatsink and the card temp was now at about 56c under load. (running 2 fans)

The rebooting would still happen but way less often, now the temperature outside is getting really warm and i havent installed my AC yet and the rebooting has started happening again, so far once today, and 3 times this weekend.

Today i noticed that on touch my PSU was really hot and barely any air was coming out of the PSU fan, the metal grid gets extremly hot during heavy load, and i was wondering if this was the reason my computer kept crashing and if a psu should be running that hot.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

That would be a good idea :p

Intel Pentium 4 - 3.2ghz
1024 ddr ram
36gig 10k rpm raptor main hard drive
230gig 7k ish rpm storage drive
Asus P5P800 mobo
Radeon X850xt 256mb

2 little fans on the pc aswell.

Now the PSU itself, im not too sure, it came with the actual computer case and the case is an Antec so i would assume the PSU is Antec. its like 430w or so if i remember right.

Using Speedfan I get,

System - 28c to 30c
CPU - 48c to 59c

Also something i have forgot to mention was my PC as been making alot more noise since that as started to happen, especially during warm days.

Thanks again for the help.

If your power suppy is out of warranty, you can replace the internal fan, its very easy to do, just replace with a faster rpm model and it should work ok

Hmm, Really really hot, and Antec Smartpower.. Know what this means?

Fuhjyyu

Thanks for the reply guys,

Im guessing it would be a good thing to replace the PSU.

I will be buying a Corsair 520W this week, I hear those are pretty good.

Now, I know almost nothing about computers, even less about power supplies.

I have read the PSU buying guide, but its still confusing as hell :p

Since im running a pretty basic system can i just pop the PSU in, plug everything needed and start it up or is there more to worry about and would be better off having it installed?

Thanks again.

You shouldn't have to worry. That Corsair is an excellent buy.

like you've said, its probably ur power supply.
i've had the same problem as u before just a different power supply ( an enermax)

everything was working well except one day the comp was rebooting itself for no reason, and checked everything and everything was well.. then when i looked at the power supply fan.. it stopped working, but i still had warranty so replaced it and all was back to new again.

got the new PSU installed today, looks nice, the new wires cleared alot of room in the case but i still have a question,

Havent gotten 1 crash all day but when I touch the grid its still is real warm and cannot feel any air coming out of the exaust, is that normal?

Thanks again
