Overheating madness!!

Don't know what's going on here... My 8800 GTS (320mb, EVGA) was overheating (going above 80c, and thus always crashing Crysis), and this was AFTER I bought a small pile of case fans.

So now, I just got my GTX 260 (896mb, PNY), and while it's a much cooler card so far (idles at 67c with the case open... yes, that's an improvement), it STILL goes up to 75c when running Crysis, crashing it within a half a minute of loading a level. It would go higher than 75c (judging by how the temp is still climbing at the time of a crash), but that seems to be the crash-limit.

Am I missing something here? RivaTuner says the ambient temp is 54c. The case is open... it's not that hot here. My CPU heatsink is very comfortable to touch, and yet my video card, like the 8800 GTS before it, is so hot, you can't touch ANY part of it without getting burned.

Ideas?

Uhh, afaik those 260 temps are normal. Your crysis shitting on you is probably thx to something else.

Without the ambient temp its hard to say.
Ambient temp is not 54C.

look for an ambient temp on your vid card to be ~45 or lower. Any higher and you have cooling issues.

Those temps are well within operating specs of the GTX 260, it's not a cooling issue. OP, have you overclocked anything? Try returning it to stock and see if it fixes the problem. Also is this a new build/new install of Windows or did you just switch to the new video card?

I see... So, what temps are we looking at before we can start calling it overheating?

Got it resolved. Crysis was just being prone to crashes in very specific spots.

With the 8800 GTS, there was usually a balloon in the system tray that said something like "The display driver has stopped working, and has been restored".

If you are overclocking the cards, that might be the problem. I've read quite a few threads about overclocked cards getting the shitpalm in Crysis.

I'm not overclocking... So, 80c is a normal temp for the GTX 260?

Things seem okay now. Idling at 60c (although it's pretty hot in here... usually it idles around 56c)
