overheating in a X850 XT?

Just got my new system up and running

its a Shuttle SB81P with a P4 3.0 Ghz , 1 gig of Ram , 160 GB digital HD

Graphics card is a HIS IceQ x850 XT PE. (I had to cut a part of the fan duct of the ICE module out the shuttle to make it fit right. Unfortunately, the card had 2 screws in the back of the card that stuck out past the tower by a couple mm, so i had to drill holes in the side of my case to make it fit)

The problem is .. when i'm playing World of Warcraft, I start getting some slight artifacts and then it shuts down and i get this message like "ATI drivers do not respond to ATI card." I'm thinking it is overheating (what are the signs of overheating in a graphics card?) cause when I took off the case and started playing it was fine.

If the problem IS overheating, I was just wondering what recommendations you guys had to ensure proper cooling? i was thinking of doing this mod

Are you overclocking? One of the problems with the X850 and its stock cooler was ATI is just so dumb on there fan speed. My card was running around 80 degrees and only 4% of the fan was being used. After I got ATI TOOL and increased the fan speed, it worked wonders. I did have that driver fail once, and that was when I overclocked it too far. I don't think the overclock was bad, just that the powersupply didn't have the juice. Hope that helps!

BTW, increasing the fan speed dropped it from 80ish to 70ish, and I only have it at 40% fan speed.
 
oh crap.. i totally forgot about ATITool.. thanks for the suggestion.....

what fan settings do you use for your fan?
 
There are 3 settings if I remember right. Something like .... "always use this % of fan speed" "keep gpu at this __ temp" and " fan speed at 40degrees, fan speed at 50, 60, 70 etc"

Right now I use the third one. I have from 0 to 39 at 5% speed, from 40 to 49 at 9%, from 50 to 59 @ 25%, 60 to 69 @ 35%, 70 to 79@ 45% and 80 to 89@ 60% and 100 degrees at 100%. I have a SN25P and it has yet to get above 80 with these settings. With the basic install settings you get from the drivers I would get upwards of 85ish... SCARY! :eek: Afterwards its a good 70 to 76ish, which is fine. ATI says it can run fine at 100 degrees :eek:
