Overheating causing freezing?

I love my 8800GS and all but if I leave my fan at the stock 30% my computer will lockup during gaming. I really don't understand because from what I've seen the temps don't get high.
When the lockup occurs if I press my caps lock key the light won't come on until it un-freezes or it takes a while to come on.

I'm not exactly sure if the fan speed increase stops it, just seems to happen a bit less.
Really want to figure it out :(

How on EARTH did you manage to run a 8800GS, overclocked or not, on a 380W PSU??!

Yes, its almost definietly your PSU. You need at the absolute minimum around 450W to run a 8800GS stable, but 500W would probably be much better.

You're probably maxing out the poor PSU. Get a higher-end one ASAP!

I would get a better PSU anyway but if the problem doesnt happen with a faster fan speed, then theres your problem.
The fan is supposed to keep the card cool when under load.
If you set the fan speed manually, set it so its fast enough to cool the card under load.
You cant just choose 30% arbitrarily if its not enough.

I agree with Nenu on the fan speed part, what are the idle/load temps for your card and your CPU it's OC-ed or not ?
I've seen a shootout between the Antec EA 430W and a Corsair VX450W (both of them are Seasonic OEM/undercover) - from that article I know that the interior temperature(s) were much higher in the Antec unit, that is the really weak point of the EartWatts.

@ korkow, Domini and PWMK2: you are misinformed, probably TopGun don't even use 200W for the entire system. That Antec EarthWatts 380W pulls away with an OC-ed e6600 and a 8800GTX... LOL proof :p

Nuby1Canuby and Co. : please don't use that power supply calculator from extreme.outervision, because it gives you way overrated values - it's not surprising how many kids with rich parrents buy 1 kW PSU's... j/k. On the other hand for really ultra-high end systems maybe it's necessary, hmmm.
For a better estimation use this PSu and 12V calculator, it's not the best, but this was the only that gave to me and others the closest values from actual readings.

Topgun, do you still get lockups when you set the fan speed to 100%?
I had issues with AMD Cool'n'Quiet causing FEAR to freeze on my system.
The game lockups went away after I disabled it.

Antec has a power supply calculator on their website:
http://www.extreme.outervision.com/powercalc.jsp

I'll have to stress test it and put the temps up here, I do have Cool N Quiet enabled
but idk if it would be that because I had it enabled with my 8600gt with no issues.

I'm really leaning towards overheating but it doesn't seem like it gets that hot. I guess
checking the temps at full load will help, is there any way to have riva tuner print out the temps to a txt file? Would be nice to know what the gfx card freezes at.

I just played around with the Real-time HDR Demo and with 3 of them going my card got up to 70*, I put the fan at 100% and the card is down to 49* while still under heavy load.
So going on this do you guys think/know it's temps?

Thanks

70c underload is normal

Well I disabled Cool N Quiet in the bios because:
I was playing NFSU2 with the fan at stock, Game froze for a little bit so I checked what the temps got up to and highest was 69*...After the initial freeze I started up the HDR demo and closed it quickly, windows froze for a bit. I'm hoping it was Cool N Quiet causing it, if it was though I don't understand why I didn't have problems with my 8600.

Edit: Talked to my friend and he said he was having similar issues until he installed the Amd Dual Core patch, now I feel like a dumbass

I wasn't saying it was the sole problem of he was having, but he's not going to have much margin for error here and running a setup like his with a 380W PSU could very well decrease the life of said PSU. And possibly components if we start seeing ripple.
I would be very surprised if his total wattage came out to be less than 200W unless the 8800GS only pulls like 40W. Most likely somewhere between 200 and 225W at idle, but that's still too close for comfort. Put in a game, and you're getting real close to having some problems.

I never thought of that Seb1. I did try the PSU calculator for my system and it only recommended 312 watts. That's with 3 HDs, 4 sticks of RAM, an overclocked CPU, 2 extra case fans, a soundcard, a 7900 GTX, DVD RW, floppy drive, and 4 powered USB devices, on top of all the normal desktop parts.

You will get better temperatures on your CPU when Cool n Quiet is disabled. If you're overclocking the CPU with stock heatsink fan it almost always must be disabled from what I've used in the past. With Cool n Quiet disabled the fan speeds will ramp up sooner and try to maintain a steady lower temperature at the cost of higher rpm's/noise.
