Overclocking with a 2.26B?

I have a Dell that came with a 2.26B and was thinking about trying it out on my IT7 mobo. Are these processors any good at OCing?

Depending on the stepping and date. Newer revision are almost gurantee 3ghz +. Had a newer 2.0ghz northwood that did 3.1ghz stock vcore.

hmm, well the chip is inside a Dell server I bought back in January (wasn't built until end of Feb). how do I determine stepping and date.

some of these chips were the first to hit 3ghz a couple years ago, other's were a dog like posted above

there's only one way to find out :D

CPUZ tells you the stepping, not sure about date. C1 is the ideal stepping to have, that's what I have and can get up to 3.1ghz on air.

can you guys tell anything from this info?

Try CPU-Z, it gives you the stepping right on the first tab.

darn, i tried CPU-Z and it says stepping 9, revision D1. thats not good is it? It does say Northwood though.

Wow, just looked though the rest of the prog and it seems to give my RAM's latency stuff. are these numbers what each RAM stick can be run at or are being run at now? Can i use this info to OC my RAM better?

also, is Specteck RAM any good? one of my sticks is that kind. i don't think i heard good things about them.

D1 stepping can be just as good if not better. Still a hit an miss thing as always but D1 = better luck.
D1 is something newer. I am interested in what that chip will do. Let me know when you are gonna be overclocking that chip.

oh great. thats great news. I should be trying my OC in 2 weeks when I get my IT7 board back from ABIT. I actually have 2 Dells with 2.26B proc in them. I'll stick my HDD in the other one and see what kind of proc is in it.

Also, since i'll be taking the cpu out of the Dell and puting it in my comp, i'll need some of that heat speading stuff that goes btwn the heatsink and the cpu. would any old stuff from compusa work fine?

any thermal paste between the cpu and and the heatsink is better than nothing. Dell most likely used the foil that came with the sink. Just make sure you clean the cpu and heatsink off first.

what should I use to clean it?

I use rubbing alcohol and usually scrape most of that shit off with my pocket knife or something smooth. Apply new stuff and good to go.

But that me...
