Overclocking vs. Performance

Is it really worth overclocking the 8800? Just how much performance gain do you get by going from stock clocks to max stable OC? Benchmarks anyone?

I only have a 3dMark06 comparison but you can get that atleast...

I know my CPU have also gotten a little extra in the following comparison, but if you just keep to looking at the SM 2 and 3 numbers, that should give you an idea of the effect even if the test is syntetic...

Edit: Normally I run the card at 600/900 for gaming, that exactly takes me over 10k i 3dMark06. Also keep in mind that my OC is modest, I have seen much higher GFX OCs on these boards...

My 8800GTX is overclocked from 575/1800 to 629/2000. My 3DMark06 went from 11,170 to 11,770. A 600 point increase. Doesn't seem to have impacted the temps much if any. 58c idle, 72c load.

Not a big leap, but doesn't seem to be hurting anything either.

when my 8800gts 320mb goes from stock to 600/920, my fps goes up around 10% in the lost planet directx 10 demo (40/41fps to 45fps)

10% is pretty decent, but not something i'll notice in most games that average the fps chart at over 60fps. If I start playing dx10 games later when the frame rate is averaging under 50fps however, i'll continuously run it a 600/920. No point now.

The link I posted showed a fair amount of sub 30fps in Oblivion, and the 16% gain from a 10% OC seemed to eliminate most of that.

The best standard overclocks (not talking water or more extotic cooling methods, volt mods, BIOS flashing, etc) will tend to get you about 10% or so of a boost.

It's such a simple thing to do most of the time that its worth trying. The biggest negative is less stability if you push to the edge.

Ive noticed better response in all games , The extra lil boost even helps me smooth out my ping when ping is High!...Over my Factory Oc ...it may only be 8-10%increase but it does positively affect gameplay for better:D
