overclocking video card = lower performance?

So I started to overclock my evga8600gt video card using rivatuner 2.24, and drivers 185.20 and to my surprise, the overclock actually DECREASED performance. Any reason why this is happening?
My video card came at a stock 685/810 vs the normally clocked 8600gt at 540/750 i believe. Anyways, I used rivatuner, found it to be stable at 730/900, but running benchmarks on it gave me lower fps (3dmark06, counterstrike source stress test).

What resolution? You'll find that 128-bit bus on the 8600GT to be quickly limiting for resolutions above 1280 x 1024.

have you tried difforent drivers? Im thinking you might be stable, but the higher speeds might be causing a memory leak.

Ya, any card has a sweet spot and getting the ram and core at the right spot on each to benefit eachother.

i've tried drivers 163.75, 169.44, and this one which is 182.50. Still same results, performance decrease with an overclock. I'm more shocked at the fact that even when I overclock mildly, there was no performance gain. The fps stayed roughly the same, give or take 1-2 fps. And when I set up to the max stable with no artifacts or lockups (730/900), the performance hit was more drastic. What should i do? And I game at 800x600 because my system isnt all that great, p4 3.2ghz prescott and 1gb of corsair pc3200 ram. I dont mind playing at 800x600, just trying to squeeze out some extra performance on this older system.

More isn't always better. At some point you'll reach the point of diminishing returns.

at that res, youre going to be CPU bound in any benchmark. youll notice higher frames with higher resolutions, though

the thing is, why would performance decrease when the video card only is overclocked vs stock speeds. Even if i am cpu bottlenecked, that doesn't explain why the fps drops when the video card is overclocked and not the processor

how much lower fps do benchmarks and games receive after the OC compared to before?

is it possible to run the games with at least 1280x1024, or perhaps something higher? if you can, see what kind of results you get. even if its not smooth, it will put more load on the gpu and might show you improvements :)

fps in the cs source stress lowered about 5 fps, and in 3dmarks06 about 500 points lower.

sometimes inadequate power from a PSU can result in lower scores. though i doubt that is the case since the 8600gt stock vs OCed power draw wouldnt be much different. whats your PSU info?

try running the tests with only your GPU and then again with only your vRAM overclocked and post the scores. just trying to eliminate some factors...

happens to my radeon 4870 too. i scored lower in 3dmark 06 when i oc it at 800mhz core then when i oc it at 790mhz.

@ ruthless-: you should monitor with RivaTuner during a benchmark your GPU (temperature, frequency, etc.) - probably your OC-ing too much and your card begins to throttle or something.

i've got a stock hp m1080n with a hipro 300watt power supply lol. I unplug all the micro sd, firewire and other jacks I dont use to conserve some of that power.
