Overclocking...troubleshooting the specs

Here are my new computer specifications:
AMD 64 3200+ 1MB L2 Cache
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
1gig Corsair XMS Extreme
two 37 gig 10,000 RPM 8MB Buffer SATA Western Digital (RAID 0)
ATI Radeon 9800 AIW Pro 128MB DDR
5 case fans + power supply
Thermaltake 12 solid copper heatsink and fan

now with those specifications, I am having trouble overclocking. I can get to 2.2GHz if the motherboard is set to "Auto" for the performance mode. The "Turbo" mode crashes the machine and will not boot.

I have my Thermaltake 12 set on auto temperature sense, and that has a idle temp of low 50s @ 2200RPM. If I disable that and have the fan at full throttle @ 5500RPM, it keeps it at 38C.

Any suggestions on how to get more umf out of my comp?

are you changing the cpu voltage? have a look at the faqs/guides regarding voltage, you might need a better heatsink before you go further

That's not one of the best heatsinks out. If you want the best get a SLK947 or whatever they are called. Those are the best out ATM.


Although 38C is a very good temp, I still think you could even get lower. Have you tried upping your vcore or just overclocking manually? On some of my previous boards I could never use the turbo mode, but manual overclocking worked fine.

i have a p4 2.4C and it has an auto config too but its pointless i have my cpu clocking at 3.42 but idk what fsb cus i dont have adia on it yet i know its not over 400 cus my ddr isnt ocin and its a stable 31C with nfsu running at 1.525 which is the default volts.....couldnt he just manually change the fsb up.. my board has a setting where i can lock the fsb for the pci/agp so my vid dont mess up ..........just thought id put my two cents in

the thermalright slk947u is the socket A version, you need the slk948u or sp94 (slightly better) or wait for the xp120, then you need a fan, either loud and powerful (louder and a lot more powerful than your volcano 12 at max speed if you so desire) or quiet and not so powerful

or if you definitely want quiet at the expense of hard overclocking a lot of people like the zalman cnps7000, (cu or alcu model) as it can beat thermalrights when a weak (i.e quiet) fan is being used

i have got an slk900a (the one before the slk947/948u) and panaflo-L 92mm which gives 43cfm airflow and 27db noise and keeps the chip at 30'C idle at stock speeds

at max speed your fan is 4x as loud but you have to expect higher temps with a64 chips... you should be able to get the same temps with about half the noise with a thermalright hs and 92mm fan... on the same noise (if you can bear it) you will get vnice temps

the best way is to get a loud fan plus a fan controller then turn it down to whatever speed you want but i find anything above 30-35db begins to intrude and anything above 40db is loud

all of my voltages are set to default.

Since I just spent $1,400 on this machine, Im not going to be changing the heatsink anytime soon, thanks for the suggestion though. When the fan is at full blast @ 5500RPM...yes, it is quite loud. I have the fan set on auto temp control, so it adjusts it as needed.

I have PC3200 Corsair XMS Extreme.

You are going to have to raise your voltages. Multipliers are going to be locked (i think) so it will be all fsb. Dont expect to much out of pc3200.

I had the same motherboard as you do in a similiar config but I found it was not a stable oc'er becasue the radeon 9800 series does not like high agp.
