Overclocking the i7, help.

So, I bought an i7 setup. Went with an Asus P6t board. My biggest complaint with this board is that the values have to be typed in and you cannot select them out of a drop down. This can be a tad confusing at times, especially with so many options.

also, there seems to be a glitch, where 1.65v for the memory is not selectable. Like, if I type in 1.65, i get 1.66, if i type in 1.66 i get 1.66, if I type in 1.64 i get 1.64. Pretty weird.


Anyway, last night I hit 3.6ghz stable. No harm in that, but I would really like to tread towards the 4.0ghz barrier.

The only settings I changed last night were

(all settings set manually)
Vcore - 1.35v
QPI/DRAM voltage 1.35v
FSB or BLK 180
DRAM timings manually set to 8-8-8-24 1T @ 1484 mhz. (1600mhz ram)


Other then that, all the settings confuse me. I am going to do some review reading and see if i can find some information on settings that help with overclock, but I am hoping to get some input from you guys. Any other settings I should mess with (like the voltages) that will help my overclock out at a lower vcore?

Also, I know for the c2 quads, max temp should be 75c under load, anything higher then that, and you can have issues. On my chip I saw 80c+ on 8 thread prime. Should these chips be held to the same standard as the c2 quads, or is more temp OK?
 
I'm not familiar with your bios, but I would slow down the mem first, and then work on getting the cpu up to speed. Not sure how your mobo deals with the "uncore" part of the cpu, but unless you change the divider on mine, it scales up with the Bclk, so that might be holding you back. As for the Vdimm, Kyle mentioned it on the Asus board video I believe, so it's a common issue with that board. You have your old system in your sig, so mention which cpu/ram, cooling, etc. you have as well....good luck !

well all ASUS work station board bios were like that (you have to type in no drop down menus)

what chip do you have? 965 940 or 920?, what is the cooler?
 
I updated my sig, I have a 920.

about how high can the QPI go? at 3.6 its at like 6500

I was reading about the PPL voltage and the termination voltage? I never touched those, but could they help stabilize an overclock?

Vcore = 1.35625 ( i have this set in the bios, but CPU-Z reports 1.40 for some reason.
QPU/DRAM = 1.4v
DRAM voltage 1.66v
ICH voltage = 1.20v
PLL voltage = 1.98v
Differential Amplitude = 800mv
FSB/BLK = 200
CPU multiplier 20
DRAM 1600mhz at 8-8-8-24

Not bad for a vanilla P6T board

also somes the cores hit damn near 90c....

Has intel put any recommendations on tempurature on these chips?

Im amazed at how hot they can get....

Nice; I have to run at 1.475 vcore to get 4ghz on air. I'm interested to see what your temps are when you run Core Damage but I can understand if you don't want to risk melting your chip. I'll hit 100°C in just a few seconds at 4ghz and the CPU will immediately throttle down to 950mhz :eek:
 
For the guys hitting above 60C, what kind of CPU coolers are you using? 100C is pretty scary, and I hear that above 1.375 vcore is unsafe? Of course, I have no clue how to overclock the i7 yet, but just saying what I've read.

Maybe Intel Burn test would be more suitable. Although Core Damage might do the same thing I have no idea.
 
ANyone Oc'g their I7-920 with a Noctua cooler? What's your highest stable OC?
