So I just recently got a hold of a i7-3770s for a price I couldn't refuse with a mb, videocard, and ram combo. My question to any/all forum members is if any of you have had any success in overclocking it? I know its not unlocked so I would imagine the gains would not be very much.

Yes you can overclock the BCLK I believe its called. You can only go like 5Mhz over, like 105 or 205...I can't remember what the base clock was. Anyways that will put you almost dead nuts on 4GHz when Turbo Boost turns on. Mine has been like that since day one and gets to about 72*C with an original Corsair H50 on it when doing movie ripping (Handbrake).

I got the 3770 because the K versions were sold out at the time, and honestly the 3770 has been plenty for me. Except for the encoding, nothing even comes close to stressing it, and even then I can still play WoW or Skyrim while encoding and its unnoticable that I'm doing that.

I have the i7-3770 non-k version, and I have been able to overclock it to between 4.3 and 4.4 by doing a couple of things.

First, the multiplier is only partially locked, such that you can change the default 35x to 41x in the bios depending on your motherboard. Second, you can change the turbo to go up to 43 on single thread. Finally, you can change the clock (BLCK) from 100 to a higher number. I only managed to get change my clock (through the motherboard overclocking software) to 101. 105 caused the system to freeze immediately, and 104, 103, and 102 eventually caused games to crash after a while. Thus, 101 is the only stable overclock I got on the BLCK.

If you do overclock, you will need an aftermarket cooler. The stock cooler is loud, and it doesn't keep the CPU cool enough on a higher overclock. I replaced the stock cooler with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 and it keeps the CPU cool and it is quite.

Nice, I figure there was some room for tinkering. What motherboard are you using?

You can't overclock unless you have a P/Z series motherboard.

But otherwise you can use the "Limited Unlocked" feature to boost your turbo bins +400 MHz (might be higher actually with these processors that feature wider turbo ranges like your 3770s). And then you can take that final speed and increase it by about %5 by adjusting BCLK.

I'm using the Biostar TZ75B board, which uses the Z75 chipset. The Bios makes overclocking pretty straightforward.

thanks for the info, I'm gonna give it a hand a hand see what kind of results I get.
