So I have a thermalright ultra 120 extreme with a 120mm fan on it. Idle, coretemp was reporting my Q6600 G0 around 32-34 on all the cores. I have now overclocked it to a measly 2430mhz just to get an idea of my bios and what does what. I have been running Prime 95 for about 10min and my cores are sitting at 55-52 degrees under full load. at stock speed of 2.4ghz I think it was around 53-51. Are these temps abnormally high. I put Artic Silver paste on there (forget the name, similar to AS5) and put a small layer on it so I put the heatsink + paste on there correctly and tightened it down well. I am just wondering how I am ever going to reach 3ghz at even these load temps.

If you want to improve the temps, try and get your case airflow as good as possible.

If you want a quick test to see how much effect better case air flow can have (best possible case), open the case side and blow a housefan at your graphics card.

edit: meant to say point the fan at the CPU but it makes little to no difference :)

Well, I opened the side of my case up so it could have plenty of air circulation. Didnt make any difference

I am now at 2550mhz with 61, 60, 58, 59 degrees for each core (loaded with prime 95). Is this normal?

If it's not airflow, it's the connection between your IHS and your heatsink. Try reseating it.

Well, I added another fan to make even more cross windows of death and took the side off my case. I am now at 2550 mhz with 55C, 54C, 50C, 52C

If you have recently fitted the heatsink, you might get a few C lower once the heatsink paste beds in.

What's your vcore and have you minimized it? Have a look at my overclocking guide... you can read though it all or skip to the temperature management section. I too have an Ultra 120 Extreme and a Q6600 (B3); @ stock settings (9x266) I'm using 1.1500 V as my vcore and my load temps are under 50 °C. I normally run it 9x333 @ 1.2625V and the temps are usually under 60 °C.

Oh so I guess a vcore of 1.224 is slightly higher than norm? Well, I have been slowly increasing the FSB and it makes fairly small differences in temps. I am at 2.8ghz now with 56,55,54,55. I am shooting for the 3ghz and be under 65ish. So I think I can make it

And yes, great guide, I had read the entire thing earlier before I ordered so I knew what to do.
