Overclocking stability issues with cold boot

I've been overclocking my duron 1.6 for a quite a few months now, but I finally got a motherboard that can take it farther. The fsb is usuall 133 (266), I have gotten it up to 183 (366) stable with 1.75v in the processor and 2.7v on that memory.
Here is my actuall issue: I turn off my system for a few hours (to sleep or whatever) and when I come back and turn it on, it everything spins up but my screen stays black. I get no beeps. The fans keep spinning. and it stays powered up. So I reset the bios, start all over again from 166 (333) and in low incraments increase to 183 (if I take jumps that are too big, same issue like I cold booted) and it's stable the whole time up.
So where should I look? Is it a video issue, processor issue, or memory issue? Anyone here of anything like this before? Appreciate your help!
 
what do u consider stable? I would try running Prime95 or some CPU stress-test to see if its really stable...that black screen thing happens to me when i OC too high, it might just be too high...have you tried lowering it a bit? does the same thing happen at 266 FSB?
 
I run the sandra soft burn in module and play around with a few programs. The same thing doesn't happen at 333 fsb. But it seems to work fine at the higher fsb until I turn it off for some time and come back. I'll try Prime95 as quick as I can get to that. Thanks for the tip. Any more tips would be welcome.

Here is your answer, DONT SHUT IT OFF. Hell, I wish any of my overclocked PC's would be stable. I can get a whole 5 minutes into UT2004, then the BSOD accurs. So your doing better than me ;) . Sorry I dont have a better answer.
 
you know, he has a point...if it doesn't run too hot (<55*C) i would leave it on, unless its insanely loud or uses too much power...keep posting on how Prime95 went...

Thanks for your suggestions. I just pulled back to 177 fsb, so I wouldnt have too worry about other issues when turning the system off or random restarts from power outages and crap. Now I have to find some other ways to tweak the system and make it a little faster. It's good practice though, all my parts were cheap as dirt, unlike some other systems running around here. I'm just pissed that my temps are so low (always under 40) and I'm hardly using any voltage right now, and turning it up still doesn't help me out to go faster.
 
well, are ur problems gone now? if they are, i would consider a problem-free system better than a tad-bit-faster-but-problematic computer IMO. I would suggest leaving it on, just like newls1 said. If you can run it higher and leave it on, maybe that's a good idea, but if you need to turn it off, tone it down. You might just have a bad OCing chip, unless it just started happening recently and i missed that :p.

Well, good luck with ur OC. Hm...other options for OC...you could up your GPU maybe, you could OC ur RAM, though i'm guessing its value ram, so u wouldn't get it that high. The only other option is to get a new proc, mobo, and RAM, but that's pricey. I would stick with what you have and OC ur other parts. If you can't do that, maybe a new system is in order.

But all that's my $.02...GIVE IT BACK, MY TWO CENTS.....the precious....
 
Yeah, its stable as is. I don't know what I'm gonna try and crank up next, all sorts of exciting choices in that BIOS. I feel like a child in a candy shop.... or just me in a candy shop. But does anyone not think it's a CPU issue I was having?

Any hints on the best ways to tighten up memory or the best things to shoot for as far as GPU would be appreciated. I guess I'll go do some searches.
 
I would shoot for either "vanilla" 9600 speeds, or Pro speeds.

As to your RAM, what are your current timings? I'm gonna assume they are 3-4-4-8 or something of the like. If they are, try 3-3-4-8 or something. If you can't boot with that, raise the vdimm (ram voltage), and i'm sure ur mobo has a limit of 2.8v for it, mine does. I would take it to 2.7 and see if it boots. actually, i would try putting ur CPU back at 183 and try upping the vcore and vdimm, maybe your RAM is the problem?

If you want to improve benchmark performance, definitely ur vid card and RAM, and even just for performance boost that is noticeable in real-world situations, i would OC both of them. You might want new RAM, though, cuz ur almost reaching 200FSB, and then you'll be seriously pushing your RAM. I would think that would be your problem reaching 183 FSB. You can get some cheap 512MB PC3200 value ram for: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-026&depa=0 $77 to be exact. and it has good timings. I would buy it, if you can. You will see a much better overclock.
