Okay I am purchasing parts for my new PC and I would like to overclock my AMD 64 to at least 2.5GHz

Now originally I wanted to go with a AMD 64 3000+ (90nm) and some OCZ 3200 Platinum Rev2 1GB kit which is $269 @ newegg. But today I saw in the HOT DEALS forum that Outpost is selling some Kingston Hyper X 1GB 3200 kit for $159.99.

Now I don't know if this memory would bring the 3000+ to the 2.5Ghz that I want, so I was wondering if I should go with this memory or stick with the OCZ. Anyone with any experiences please share.

Also would the Kingston memory and a 3500+ (90nm) be able to hit 2.5Ghz no problem? If so maybe I'll go with that alternative.
 
I dunno about that particular memory being sold by Outpost but I am running two sticks of HyperX PC2700 that were built in Week 1 and Week 13 respectively (based on BH-5) and they will run DDR400 safely at 2.5-3-3-10, which I found pretty impressive. I've always had good experience with Kingston RAM but I don't think they are particularly your best bet for getting the absolute best overclock out of your RAM. PQI Turbo or Ballistix would probably be your best bet with your setup (based on recent TCCD memory).

Then again, for $159, I don't think I would care. You can't beat that! :eek:

I ask this question only because I don't want to have to buy that OCZ memory if I don't have to. I know it gives the best overclocking options but it is expensive as hell. And if I can overclock this memory enough to get my A64 to 2.5GHz then i'd be satisfied.
 
You're probably going to want the tighter timing ram. When you're overclocking, you need high quality ram to be able to reach stuff like 230+ FSB at decent CAS2.5 timings. If your stock 200 Mhz timings are already 2.5, you have little chance of doing the same at 230+
