I have an opteron 170 overclocked to 2.65 ghz @ 1.55v. Is it bad that I needed that much voltage to get this overclock. I might try to lower the voltage and see if it's still stable. What's the best way to test a stable overclock? Prime95 or superpi or something else? What's the highest safe voltage you think i can go?

You can't really compare Athlon XP cores to the Opteron as they are a totally different breed. That said, I might be inclined to back off the voltage a bit. You don't have to, depending upon your temperatures. You didn't mention what they were, so if you wouldn't mind sharing that bit of information, tht would be great :p

prime and dual 32m are a good indication of stability. I would not consider that A high voltage if your temps are good considering many have run over 1.6v in their dc opties.

1.6v is definitely the line where you separate the air coolers from the fired cpus. Very few brave running at or certainly above 1.6v without adequate preparations

Well, I wouldn't exactly call them brave :p

But yes, as long as your temps are in check, 1.55V should be ok. Still a little high for my taste, but I'm not a hugely hardcore overclocker :p I run 1.475V through my Venice.

Anything under 1.7 works great  I recomend 1.6v but for the daring they can take 1.65v easy.

the ite smartguardian software that came with my dfi mobo is reading about 28 C, but the room is slightly air conditioned. Normally, it reads low 30's around 31 or 32. I hope that's accurate. I've never had any problem with games or other programs messing up. Plus i tried running 2.7ghz at 1.55v and it got an error in prime95 in one of the cores after about 10 hours or so, so I bumped the speed down to 2.65ghz and it seems to run fine ever since despite the higher that I would like voltage. My bro runs 2.7ghz on his opty 170 at like 1.41v or something. I guess it all depends on the cpu, they are all different. Some cpu's need little voltage and some need a lot for an overclock.

prime95 to test for stability. some people have their voltages at 1.61v, some have it at 1.3v- it all depends on ur cpu.
