Overclocking Question: Adjusting Multiplier?

I've always had my multiplier at 11 on my AMDXP 2500+ Barton. After seeing other people's overclocks, I've noticed a lot of other people with higher FSB, and lower multiplier. After a year of overclocking experience, I've never come across an explanation about multipliers, so I must ask..

What is the best way to approach adjusting the multiplier? Obviously I can achieve a certain speed with a higher multiplier and lower FSB. However, I've read that getting to that same speed with a lower multiplier, but higher FSB is ideal? What are the reasons for this, and perfomance difference?

Also, how do you go about finding the right multiplier. I assume just "guess and check" for stability?
 
most processors do not let you set your multiplier willy-nilly, it's the mobile bartons and some of the old thoroughbreds that let you do it. there are mods to unlock some of the tbreds that are normally locked.

the biggest thing about running with high FSB is that it gives you better memory bandwidth for a given clock speed, all other things being equal.

as a rule, espicailly on a32 chips, the biggest bottleneck to system performance is memory bandwidth. FSB overclocking therefore gives the best gains by alieviating the worst bottleneck.

just remember that dropping your cas latency to 2.5 is a major memory bandwidth hit, and that it takes some pretty serious FSB gains to make up for it.
 
My barton is one of the early steppings, and the multiplier is unlocked. Currently I'm running BH5 at 2-2-2-11 at 11*210 (2310mhz). Knowing that my memory has a long way to go before it maxes out as long as I can supply it with enough voltage, would my current overclock have more performance by going 10.5*220 (2310mhz)?

drop the multi as much as you can while increasing the fsb to maintain the same(or close to the same) cpu speed...even losing 50mhz on the cpu core to get 10-15mhz on your fsb would probably be worth it...just benchmark and see what works out to be the best combination for you
