Overclocking Q6600? RAM??

Hey guys,
Ok so I built a new rig the other day, and I had a couple questions about OCing. First off I have the Q6600 (G0) and I would like to get it to 3.0ghz or 3.2 ghz. Thing is I am using the stock cooler. HWMonitor shows that the chip is idling at 47C (should I be worried about this?). Now one of my biggest concerns is my RAM. I purchased this RAM for the rig, and I also added this from my old one (this isn't the EXACT same ram but the specs are the same from what I can tell looks like the design is just a little different). My question is whether or not the old RAM will screw anything up, and should I just ditch it. And if I was to ditch it would the 2gbs of ram be missed? Well I guess I will stop there, and if you need anymore info let me know.

Ditch the old pqi DDR2 533 RAM. It will heavily limit your OC and the extra 2GB of RAM won't be missed unless you do a ton of virtualization or heavy photoshop.

As for the temps, use Prime 95 or Orthos or any other CPU testing app to see what the load temps are. the max temperature for the Q6600 should be around 65C to 70C. Though I have seen others OC the Q6600 with the stock HSF, just with high temps that I would not be comfortable with.

Well I had already gotten Prime95 to see how it would do (running at 3.0ghz) and after a bit it was reaching temps in the high 70s :eek: This is when I stopped the test. I guess I'll just have to look into something other than the stock fan to keep the temps a lil lower. Anyone have any good (reasonably priced :)) suggestions?

I also did some looking around and saw this. If it comes down to money I will probably go with the one you suggested. But if I end up with a little extra cash and want to splurge would it be worth it to go with the Silent Knight?

Edit: Oh and about the bolt kit. I really don't mind the push pin installation, but would it be better to go with the bolting?
 
The bolts are better. Those push pins, if you take the cooler off a few times, become weak. God forbid you don't click one in all the way your temps will be erratic.

I grabbed the Xigmatek S1283 for my Q6600. Had a Thermalright SI-128 on there. Temps dropped a lot. I'm pleased with it. And for the price you can't beat it.

The Asus HSF is not a good buy. The Xigmatek I chose still outperforms the Asus Silent Knight II while being cheaper at the same time. Oh and I recommend buying the Xigamtek ASAP before A) the free shipping is gone or B) it goes out of stock, again.

As for the bolt-thru kits, yeah I'd say it's better to get the kit. Easier to install, lesser chance of the stress on the mobo, etc.
 
+1 for the S1283, don't waste your money on the Asus. If it goes out of stock at Newegg or the free shipping is gone it can be had here for $29.99.
 
I just bought another from Newegg. For $36.99 w/ free shipping it was cheaper than buying it from Directron for $29.99 /w shipping, which came to $38.85. It'll go nicely with this Phenom II I got for free. :)
