Few questions. Just started overclocking this processor (system in sig) last night, last time I did any overclocking was on my p4 2.4c. Anyway, I've been doing a bit of research and I've seen people overclocking this processor by upping the multiplier and some leaving the multi at default and upping the cpu frequency, is there an advantage to using one over the other? I was looking at a couple different guides (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1327003 and http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=596023). I'm currently just upping the multi and nb speed to match the figures in the second guide. Here's my current stable overclock, been running prime95 for about 4 hours with no errors so far and @ 45C max at load. Also should I be doing anything with my ram? I'm still not clear on what do do with that even after reading those threads. Thanks in advance for any help!

Out of curiosity, are you running the stock cooler? Those are some good temps right there. As for me, I normally just overlock by increasing the cpu multiplier as I don't like to mess with things such as the bus speeds since bad things can sometimes happen is it isn't stable. I suppose that is the convenience of having an unlocked cpu multiplier with our black edition Phenoms.

Up to 3.9ghz @1.55v 42C under full load. Can't go higher than this on the voltage from my understanding since I'll be using this overclock for everyday use. Any suggestions?

you are correct... you should not pass 1.55v for every day usage..

overclocks not bad at all for a C2 stepping 965.. especially if your using windows 7 64bit..

Congrats on your successful overclock. I have my 965 mildly overclocked to 3.5ghz and cannot go any higher due to the high temperatures that are mostly caused by having a high room temp in my computer room. I am seriously considering doing a bigass cpu cooler, or a Corsair H50 CPU only water cooler right now. I have gotten bit by this Folding@home bug right now and am desperately finding ways to increase my performance in folding for the [H]ardOCP team.

I got it stable at 4ghz but had to bump it up to 1.6v, maxes out at about 50C under full load (prime95). Would I be safe running this all the time?

AMD recommends only going to 1.55v for a 24/7 overclock, but if you keep temps under control 1.6v should be ok. You'll shorten the life of the chip, but there's no way to tell exactly how long that'll be. If you're going to own it for 3-4 years, I would stay at AMD's limit. If you upgrade every year or two, you might be ok.

Hmm, that's interesting. Your temps seem way better than mine, but then again, I do have my GPU's in the same loop as my CPU. I have a 965 C3 stepping, idle temps are around 40 C, with room temps around 25-30 C. I blame my crappy thermaltake radiator for my high temps (have a D-tek fuzion V2 water block and MCP655 at speed setting 4 :D). I'm currently running it at 3.8ghz at 1.4 V, any suggestions on what you think my maximum overclock would be?

Set the voltage to 1.55v and start upping the speed. If your temps are decent, you should be able to hit 3.9Ghz to 4.2Ghz. Also, you might want to try upping you NB speed. You can change it with a multiplier setting like the CPU, and getting it to 2.4Ghz or more really helps.

dude...

I almost fell out of my chair when I read your clocks

my unlocked phenom II 555, is identical to yours!!!!

literally am running
3.8ghz @ 1.488
3.9ghz @ 1.536-1.55
and i can reach 4ghz with 1.6volts.

except im running on air. Update this thread with your final settings, im curious, maybe i can push my chip as well. I just dont wanna put more than 1.55 through it, so i settled at 1.488 @ 3.8ghz

My NB is set to 2900

From what I read, the NB on the NF980 doesn't overclock well, but we'll see.

I definitely need to get a better radiator though, anyone got a 2x140mm radiator they'll be willing to sell to me? Or buy my Cosmos so that I can get a CM 690 II + 2 radiators? :D

My core is currently idling at 40+ C, at 3.8 ghz it hits 62-63 C under Prime95. Either my waterblock is not performing as well as it should be, or my radiator can't remove the heat fast enough.
