Overclocking Phenom II 550

Would someone be kind enough to hold my hand and tell me how to oc this thing?
I've read all the how too's, but to be honest, I'm having a hard time getting my head around this stuff. Last time I overclocked was back when you had to use a pencil to unlock the chip. So it's been awhile. I have DDR2 800 ram. A Gigabyte 785G mobo, and cooling coming out of my ass. Right now the cpu is holding at 1 degree over ambient. I have the Dark Knight hsf, so I'm good there. I figure I should be able to get to 3.8 ghz with this. I know, I'm not a big fan of hand holding threads either, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
ok well first off do you want to keep this as a dual core.. or try to unlock it to a quad core?

as for the overclocking its actually very very simple..

go into the bios.. find the tab that shows the cpu multiplier.. i cant remember the default for that processor but it will be something like 14x or 15x.. every number you raise it.. say 15x to 16x increases the cpu clock by 200mhz.. every half number 15x to 15.5x is 100 mhz..

the only things you need to change to overclock a black edition cpu is the multiplier and cpu voltage.. the 550BE has been able to hit 3.8ghz on stock voltage.. but you may have to raise it.. each processor is different.. and thats it.. very simple.. no hand holding.. so enjoy..

btw make sure you disable the cool 'n quiet feature.. since it doesnt work when overclocking with the multiplier..
 
Ok in CMOS I have a setting called CPU Voltage Control. I assume that's where you change the voltage. However, you can only increase it by increments, which is fine. But when I change those my NORMAL CPU VCORE reading remains unchanged at 1.3250V. Do I have to save my settings first before that reading changes?

I did try to unlock the other 2 cores. But that didn't work.
 
Ok I have it oc'd from 3.1 to 3.8ghz on stock voltage. Running Prime 95 and core temp reads 36c/98f. Seems stable at the moment. Man, I bet this thing will hit 4ghz easy. Setting the voltage on my bios, I just don't know about.
 
yeah its been recorded to do 4ghz with a tiny boost in voltage.. the phenom II's are rated at a max voltage of 1.55v so you are fine.. stock voltage is 1.32v i believe.. you shouldnt have to go above 1.4v to get 4ghz stable.. but with your cooling it wont be a problem at all to go higher then that.. even at 1.5v it shouldnt exceed 55C with that hsf on prime95..


woops missed the post above your last one.. yes you have to save it then let it reboot for it to show the voltage change.. dont forget that you can also use AMD overdrive to overclock with on that chipset.. but i only recommend using amd overdrive to test overclocks.. once you find a stable one with overdrive.. go back into your bios and do the setting changes there..

when using overdrive to do the voltage changes you have to make sure you change the CPU and the northbridge voltages to match.. since the northbridge is inside the cpu..

That would explain why windows froze immediately while using overdrive when I changed the multiplier and voltage. Didn't change the north bridge.
 
Maybe it's my motherboard, but I can't get a stable clock speed above 3800 even at 1.45 voltage and 200 HT. I have the Biostar TA790GXB A2+. There is a chipset voltage option as well as a "start up" CPU voltage setting and a CPU VID voltage control. So it seems there is two voltage controls. I don't suppose I need to set the north bridge voltage via the chipset voltage setting?

Did any of you manage to get it past 3800/200 HT?
 
no the northbridge is inside the cpu.. so its controlled by the cpu voltage.. you really dont need to change the chipset voltage because it wont effect anything as far as overclocking..

ya may just have a bad overclocking processor.. but you could try going to 1.5v see if it will go to 3.9ghz or 4ghz..
