i just found a p3 900 in the garbage and it works so why not overclock it? the only brick wall is that it had an intel motherboard.

Hmm... p3 overclocking... probably the last time i oc'd by changing jumpers and using dip switches on the mobo. You might be able to oc the fsb by looking at labels inside on your mobo. Or try to find it in a manual for the mobo.

What kind of system is it an offshelf mobo or is it a custom compaq/hp/dell/etc abomination.

when i found it it was basically an unmarked case, no sides, and just the mobo/cpu and powersupply. no clue as to what brand, if any.

It's no easy task but you have to try and identifty the mobo in some way. Or at least what the jumpers/dip switches do.

Get your hand on an ol' BX board and have some fun.... I have one on my work bench now :p
My fileserver runs a PIII 850, runs it just fine with XP..... just give it plenty of ram if you plan to load xp on it.

A bit harsh on the old processors there... I run a PII 350 at work on Windows 2000... its not that bad. Noisy as hell compared to PIII 550 I'm posting on (which also runs Windows 2000 fine) and it sounds like a monster truck derby compared to my A64 3000 system... but thats beside the point.

A PIII 900 is a pretty sweet find. Who would throw it out? OC it and set it folding!!
