Anybody doing it? Like, manually, at all?

I had to loosen up my memory timing on the 2x16 Crucial Pro kit I have (CP2K16G60C36U5B), but with that it managed the advertised 6000 mt using expo1 settings and 2000 IF, passed memtest.

After that was set, I decided I wanted faster. I knew my memory would struggle, but if I raised the bclk then everything would be faster and maybe it would just work! 👨‍🔬💥

So that's what I did! Started with 103...took a minute, but then it booted up. So I pressed on with 105...booted a bit faster. So I ran memtest again just to be sure the imc and stuff isn't throwing random garbage before I boot into an OS, and it passed again...cool!

Haven't tested any games or anything yet. Updated packages and removed the steam-native package, so steam refuses to work now for some reason. Even made a new user account and still didn't work. But KDE Plasma runs fine, nothing crashed immediately and browsers still work, so that's a good start I guess.

Oh, I did run `stress` with 8 threads for a while and nothing bad happened. Did eventually reach TJmax, but not suprised at that -- the fractal mood is not a great airflow case.

Heroic fails to launch and floods cache memory, eventually crashes. qml error about something not in a surface. Also have a gpu error related to the fw in the log. Could be a driver bug or OC related. I reduced PCI to v3 speeds but it still fails. Will try disabling oc next.

I lied. Updated Arch, and there was a kernel and an intel firmware update, so instead of disabling, I pushed it further to 108 bclk.

Memtest now reports CPU at 4.536GHz, running to ensure minimum stability before booting the OS again.

Edit: Passed no problems, 16m 11s

FW says ~4.6GHz (fluctuates), mem @ ~6560MT/s.

Edit2: Yeah, still nothing with Heroic, same memory leaky behavior. Besides the fw error I noticed before, there's also a weird "PCODE Mailbox failed" error, "Illegal command," and I noticed it's complaining about not being able to resize the BAR (even though I know that's enabled right now). Almost certain it's because it can't handle the higher bus speed at this point. 😭

A fair number of am5 cpu memory controllers don't seem to be reliable at expo settings while keeping it 1:1.

I think the problem is bclk related, and not a controller problem. Especially at the VSOC that he is running.

Yeah, it can go up to 108, no memory errors, system boots to Linux fine, I can run stress tests and Firefox no problem. Chromium crashes, but that seems to be related to the GPU bug I'm experiencing -- Steam and Heroic also use Chromium for their interface, technically, which is why they crash.

The issue seems to be that (some of) the devices on the pcie bus don't like that too much, and I may have lost/broke my GPU's firmware somehow. It still works, but it throws some errors and causes some programs to crash which rely on certain features. Still haven't figured out how to fix it, reverted to 100 bclk until I do.

I have not used Memtest86 in like 15 years. Not very good.

I use TM5 these days, and if you want to find fabric errors run OCCT.

Your system is not stable, not even remotely.

you cant, the clock is all out of wack and it doesnt like that. just like in the old days.
No, it's still buggered regardless. Everything stock, no good. Probably need to reflash the firmware, but there's none available for my card yet, as far as I can tell.

I didn't even bother with any of my 7950Xs ... kind of.
The new overclocking is just to set as low of a negative offset as you can, and lower the PPT limit
All four of my 7950Xs are stable at -20, and are way below 95C under full load with a 185W PPT (this gives a few % above stock performance)

185w is only 25w above stock for my 9900X, which is capable of 300w with PBO.

Didn't need to reflash. Turns out even though Resize BAR was enabled in the firmware, it wasn't actually enabled. After I disabled and then re-enabled reBAR, everything started working. :banghead:

So now that that was sorted, I set it back to 108 and booted the OS. MT5 doesn't have a linux binary, and doesn't work in Wine...aida64 does. Ran the memory and cache test alone, and as you would expect it locked up after about a minute. No reboot though, so not terrible. Need to drop the clock and test some more, probably should start at 100 and work up.

Edit: dropped to 106, aida64 just passed 10m testing memory+cache, so I'm gonna let it run and hit the hay.
Edit2: Ran all night, no problem, about 8hrs. Seems fairly stable, no crashes, nothing in the logs. Ran a couple low-demand games fine. Gotta test some more.

So, back to this a bit. Installed phoronix test suite, currently running unigine heaven at 1080p and 720p. But what I thought was interesting was while it was installing the rt on vk test, it had to compile, and got up to 93C cpu temp. Took a minute to get there of course, and only for certain compile stages, but interesting anyway. As soon as the cpu returned to idle it dropped under 42C almost immediately -- that PhaseSheet means bidness!

Anyway, plan is unigine heaven, rt on vk, and geekbench (but may not be able to do that due to license restriction for automated testing). Might run some other tests too, but I just want to see the difference so exactly which tests aren't too important. Heaven so far is running around 200fps at 1080p, and 300fps at 720p, avg, by my rough estimation.

After it's done with this batch, I'll set the bclk to 100 and run them again, then compare the results.

Edit: Yeah, geekbench failed to run. The others finished successfully however. Testing at 100 bclk now.

Edit2: Ah, had the resolutions wrong for unigine. Corrected above. Tests all finished, and it was margin of error -- gained like 5fps at 720p, lost 5fps at 1080p. The rt in vk tests finished with almost the same framerate average. File transfers might actually be a bit faster, but I won't test that now. Not worth the trouble. lol
