overclocking oddness

I used to overclock my Q6600 on my Rampage Formula last year until I started playing Grid. It would crash/bsod.

After awhile I found my RAM to be faulty, so I replaced it with 4GBs of Crucial Ballistix Tracer.
I can overclock to 300FSB but when I try say 350 or higher, I don't get a video signal when the PC restarts after saving the settings.
CPU voltage is at 1.5, RAM is at 2.

Any ideas?

what version of crucial ballistix tracer are you using? ddr2 800 or 1066? and what timings are you using on the ram and what ram multiplier?
 
The RAM is ddr2-800.
Timings are by default 5-5-5-18.
Multiplier for RAM?
 
I can set the FSB to 333 & boot no problem at 3GHz but if I try higher, I don't get a video signal, not even a post.
Have to hit the power to restart it so that I can return to the bios.
PCIe is set to 100.
I had the cpu voltage at 1.5 to try a higher FSB with no luck.
Dram voltage is at 2v.

Any ideas??
 
I am not up on that board but wonder what it does for a memory ratio. If that is set on auto maybe (like my gigabyte) it will pick a memory ratio/speed that runs the ram too fast if you do not watch it closely when changing FSB and reboot. I just manually lock it to 2.0 (1:1) which should be good for 400FSB with your memory, until I get the cpu/FSB where I want and then go back and see what the memory will do. Likely not the problem but thought I would mention it.

eh, whatever.

to figure out your actual memory speed vs its rating.....

board shows memory mulitplier in an odd way I am not used too. since the memory buss speed cannot be lower than the FSB speed the ratio must always be greater than one. For example your 5/6 I would have expected to be 6:5 and then you would calculate memory speed


for a 400FSB and the ratio number reversed so that the ratio is > 1 : (a valid thing to do as the intel chipset cannot do dividers, memory speed is multiple of FSB. )

FSB x 2 x ratio = 400x2x6/5 = 800x1.2 = 1000 MHz which is way overspec for your ram and either I dont understand what is going on with the memory ratio or the board has great relaxed ram timings to allow that speed or you have some of the best OCing 800MHz ram I have seen in a long time :D

I was just worried about your not seeing any video and it appears you are now OK . So carry on, have fun.
 
The video signal loss is when I tried at 450. I was able to get 400 easily, so it may just be a setting I am missing for 450.

The RAM timings are 5-5-5-18 2T.

Not sure what I missed before when I tried to go to 400 & got the signal loss. But it's gone with the 400 but back when I try 450. LOL

DRAM freq. is locked at ddr2-800 if that makes a difference.
