Overclocking NIC

I am going to overclock my network card. I don't know how I am going to accomplish this,or how long it's going to take me, but I am going to do it. I figure if there's any way to get [H]ard, its going to be by overclocking something no one has before. :D

any comments or suggestions welcome. :p
 
Good luck though I do not think you will have a ton of success. Overclocking a processor is like apples and oranges when trying to do the same with a NIC. NIC rely on data transfer standards that do not apply to CPUs and such.

In order to OC a NIC you will have to mess with the software driving the card. Unless you are familiar with that stuff I think you are going to have to be patient like the rest of us and let the guys in lab coats do their jobs.
 
How about you just turn off your AGP/PCI lock and crank up that FSB? :p
 
Other than to say that you have the biggest balls on the block...

...what are you trying to accomplish with this?
 
another thing that you could try also would be Network Adapter Teaming.... that is if you are looking for more speed out of your network connection without converting over to
gigabit.... www.nicexpress.com has the answers that you are looking for.... you can do this in either linux or windows based systems :D
 
overclock to your hearts content. you will actually not change anything because:

(1) your network card cannot transmit faster than the rest of the network. a cat5 cable simply cannot accept more than 100mbps without distortion.
(2) the uart is going at maximum speed already.
(3) i'm pretty sure its all hard-wired. no changing.

it'd still look cool, but its time that could be better spent on squeezing that last 10mhz that you *know* you can get out of your cpu.
 
By OCing his NIC he'd theoretically be able to open his recieve windows wider and for longer before the buffers fill up!

Oh and starhawk, your #1 is technically incorrect. A proper length and twisted CAT5 cable will infact do Gigabit speeds.

cat5 cant accept more than 100mbps without distorting? my 1000mbps switch and gigabit lan port on my mb use cat5 cables and work fine.

i also have a linksys 24port gigabit fiberoptic switch with dedicated 200mbps ports using cat5. you mean you cant run the cat5 cable more than 100 yards before it distorts..other than that gigabit use rj45 and cat5.

if you get distortion after 100 yards(300 feet or so) use a repeater device.

hell no... do you have any idea what that does to collision domains?

of course i do, you get frequent jams..but if someones having problems with distortion and massive packetloss and latency what other alternative do they have?

fibre?

I do a lot of networking, and the only times I've had to exceed 325ft (100m) we had planned on using fibre for the run. realistically, you want a main MDF, and anything over 100m or on a different floor should have an IDF for that section and a fiber run from each IDF to the MDF. Cost becomes prohibative, tho.

heh, out of all my posts i wasnt referring to corporate usage..i was referring to home usage :p , lol mixup i guess :D ..fibre isnt a realistic option for home users at the moment..for anyone that needs to get across their house, its either a repeater or use wireless with a signal booster.. =/
 
Ok, I admit it. I didnt actually think it was possible to overclock the nic... but I can dream can't I?

:D i once told someone to oc their tv. they were p!ssed at the lousy resolution they were getting.

how do you oc a case tho? its just metal.

If you're switching your collision domains will be tiny anyways.

:D 5e and 6 are technically speaking much better for GigE as they're made to handle it better.
