So here are my exploits at my first overclocking attempt.

I checked out a few threads, and found that RivaTuner 2.06 is a good thing to get, so I downloaded it and thus began my journey. I have a BFG GeForce 7800GS OC, stock speeds of 400MHz GPU, 1250MHz RAM. I used these stock numbers, and my 3dMark06 score was 2723. Then I started slowly, upping each speed by 5% (420/1312) and my new score was 2844. Another 5% (440/1375) and my score was now a 2931. Then I did 5% more (460/1437) and my score was 2995. So I found a cap somewhere between 10-15% uppage of my speeds. I also ran Bioshock and found much to my surprise that I can run the game and it's noticably smoother and I can actually add a graphic option or two! Yay! Idle the card sits at about 46 C, and after 3DMark ran after the last run, i twas at 54 C. Now my questions:

1) I've seen my buddy OC some stuff before, and it would show artifacts and spew weird ass phantom images. On this adventure, I didn't see anything. I know that artifacts are a sign of a bad thing, what are other signs that I can keep an eye for?

2) What are your experiences with overclocking as far as percentages are concerned? Preferably, if anybody else has OC'd this card, what speeds have you gotten the GPU/RAM speeds to? I don't have much point of reference and I'm not sure how far I can push it before it just dies on me.

3) Around what degree C is a danger zone? My GPU's alarm was set at 128 C, but that seems too late to me. I set it at 100, but should I set it lower?

Thank you much for your help guys! hopefully next visit I'll have some more good news.

Artifacts, lock-ups, just look for any undesirable behavior.

Some quick Googling says that you're right on the money, maybe even a little on the lucky side. :) 1500MHz RAM seems to be near the higher end, and I've only found a handful of 500 cores. I'd back down a little bit to keep a buffer, but that's just me. If you ran it at those speeds and didn't see any artifacts, then by all means, go for it. Just make sure you test it properly, like looping 3dmark for several hours.

Matter of personal preference, but 100C is fine. You could drop it down to 90 if you were really uncomfortable with your computer boiling water, but the only way your card will hit 90 is if the fan stops dead. If that happens, 100 isn't a long way off anyway.

Thank you sir, I shall keep that in mind as I loop my 3dMark and make sure nothing explodes. Or implodes. :( Hopefully an update is coming soon
