Overclocking my X1800XT 512

I have a standard ATI Radeon X1800XT 512

I ran the over clocking configuration utility, and it set my graphic processor to 689MHz, and my graphic memory 797MHz. In your opinion is this a good speed? Can the fan that the card comes with handle it?

If the CCC or ATITool (whichever you used) set it to those speeds, you should be fine. It will always test the clocks before it applys them. While you are in game, just look out for artifacts. If there are lo artifacts over long periods of stress, you will be OK.

As for the temps, yo will want to monitor them. If the card is getting upwards of 75 or 80C, then you might want to get some aftermarket cooling. Below these temps should be OK. Granted those are a bit toasty, but w/e.

Just out of curiosity, Can OC a card make the quality of graphics it produces slightly worse? since you are making it a faster process?

No. Only if you OC it too much, then artifacts will appear. (flashing triangles/white dots)

~75/80C is pretty normal for a XT under load (with the default fanspeed program). You can lower it with setting a higher fanspeed manually, but this ain't necessary.
