Hey, this will be my first Intel purchase (not counting the Slot 233mhz I threw out the window). I'm buying the following things:
Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.6c 800mhz
Cooling: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?DEPA=&sumit=Go&description=35-110-008&searchdepa=0
Abit IC7-MAX3 Motherboard
Corsair XMS Platinum 256(x2) DDR400 RAM - for dual channeling

How far do you think that can I push my 2.6c with that cooling and still have it in a moderately cool temperature range, given my case fans do a good job?

Another thing, I've been seeing posts about peoples' performances varying. Is it true that there is a "luck of the draw" where you may get a 2.6c performing poorly, and another one performing well?

Luck of the draw, smuck of the draw. I say all 2.4c and above should get 3.0ghz. If it doesnt then its not the processor holding you back.

Crank up the fsb and see what you can get. You should reach at least 3.0.

One more thing... I hear about people being at 285mhz FSB or BUS or whatever, and 2.6c has 800mhz... and... wow IM CONFUSED!

Intel "quad pumps" the processors, so they are a real 200 MHz, but they are "quad pumped" to 800 MHz.

2.6C is 13x200 = 2600MHz
13x230 = 2990MHz (May be as much as 2998MHz depending on the FSB portion thats rounded off.)
13x231 will be at least 3003MHz, mabye a little more.

Thanks a lot! That clears things up. So, basically, the 2.6c has a 13x multiplier, and is at a FSB of 200mhz.

I'm still a little confused on the "800mhz" it has. Bear with me, as I'm a newbie.

that's the total speed of the Front side bus or the speed at which the processor talks to the northbridge. Since there are four channels running at 200mhz, it's considered to be running at 800mhz. If you bump up the FSB to 250mhz, then your total FSB will be 1ghz! That should be EASY with your setup.

Yep so with the regular 200fsb, you are running insynch exactly with your RAM...

that's true even if you OC as long as you keep the CPU to ram ratio at 1:1.
