Overclocking my 955BE

So I started off by upping the Multi to 17, then 18, then 19x.

At 19x it crashed after about 45 minutes of running the stability test in AMD overdrive. I was really hoping to hit 3.8 Ghz stable.

I'm back on to 18x running at 3.6 Ghz @ 35 C degrees idle and 55 under 100% load (in a 72 F room) From here what do I do? Start to increase the NB freq?

The biggest problem is my Motherboard won't let me change and voltages (Ram or CPU) so I'm limited by that.
 
3.6ghz at stock voltage is about your limit.. 3.8ghz requires about 1.4-1.44v and 4 ghz is some where between 1.47-1.5v.. this is if you have a C3 stepping 955..
 
I have the C2 955BE and It needs 1.48v to get 3.8ghz stable. What cooler are you using?
 
you start with a mobo upgrade if you want to exceed 3.6 GHz

otherwise, yes increasing the FSB will net you some more, but you need more voltage to do this....and so your limit is still going to be ~3.6 GHz regardless of how you get there........the 770NB is not the best chipset to be overclocking on either....

huh? the 770 series boards are the BEST boards to overclock on out of the entire 700 series of chipsets.. its the only chipset to exceed 300+ HT(FSB) on a consistant basis.. yeah there are some shitty boards that use the 770 series chipset that dont over clock for shit but any decent 770 board out does any 790 series chipset.. funny thing is the chipset has nothing to do with overclocking.. only the SB does even though the majority of 770 series boards out overclocking 200+ dollar 790FX boards..

Yes, it's a C3 stepping. Not sure if upping to 3.8ghz is worth upping the Voltage for me though.

Yeah, I read that this motherboard isn't the best to OC with. When I bought it I wasn't planning on running more than 1 video card or overclocking.

The motherboard is a piece of crap.

So after reading tons of reviews people mentioned they couldn't change the cpu voltage on this motherboard (ASUS M4A77TD). I start tinkering with it finally figured out how. You can't just select and press enter.

On default it's set to "Auto". You either have to enter the exact number you want the voltage to be or use the +/- buttons on the numberpad to do it. It's different than any motherboard I've used before but I kept wondering why the description said I could change the voltage.

let me clarify, that board , and those like it, are crap for overclocking, 770's do well, i was being a bit generic

yeah thats what i figured but i didnt want people to get the idea that all 770 series boards were bad overclockers..
 
lol, ya my bad, was in a rush when I typed that out


@muz- all AMD mobo's that i have ever used work on that BOIS option, +/- or directly typing in the number to choose voltage.....
 
Have you tried AOD + the instructions on how to use this program.It will give step by step instuctions on how to use and this may take time to dial in.It also gives excepted outcomes,but beware this is from a small sample source and results can vary.You can expirement on your on or let the program find your settings for you.Whorth a try
