is there a place i can read about overclocking that is very basic and straight to the point

like what variable im dealing with .. dont want to get to deep .. i just want to conservatively overclock my system

what cpu , mobo, ram? all those are factors. theres alot of guides on these forums. but overclocking amd64's is a bit diffrent from say a amdxp or a p4

here is my system .. thanks for your reply

my current cpu temp in bios when just sitting is 42c ...is there enough room for me to overclock with stock coolingE

and is my ram going to be a problem ...

i just read the sticky in this section on overclocking and i understand more but still not there yet lol

no ur ram shouldnt be a problem, and ur stock cooling should be ok, but keep an eye on the temps (its load temps that count). a better cooler would help, alot of people are going w/ xp-90's from thermalright. so basicly, u wana take up your htt in small increments all while checking if its stable. keep ur ram at its proper speed w/ ratios, and keep the htt multiplier at the right value so your htt bus wont be too high. if u can u may need to raise voltages here and there, but for starting, dont. if u have no prior exp, its HIGHLY recomended u read the amd64 guide to ocing on this forum.

ok guys i need some help

i read some threads and tried a few thing in the bios setting above .. in the link i provided a couple of post above ...

well lol when i try to start my computer it bepps and doesnt start .. how can i reset bios get it going again lol

or am i in the market for a new mb lol

help ..

i'll be looking on newegg while i wait for a reponse

lol take is easy buddy. this happens to us all thousands of times. bust out ur manual. find the cmos clearing jumper. while the pcs off, pull it out and put it o the opposit side of the pins. leave it for a few seconds, and then put it back where it was b4. if u cant find that in ur bios (though its for sure in there) u can always pull out the battery and put it back in in a bit, while the psu is off. this is nothing to panic about. no need to contact any1 for rma ect.

btw, if u dont have ur manual u can get 1 online from the manufacter usualy, or do the battery thing. lemme guesse u oced farther than ur shit can handle, or ur running ur ram way outa spec. u gotta oc in smal steps all while checking for stability.

i recomend u use a software ocer, then when u find the settings u like/are stable, go into bios and set em permenantly.

lol

i found in my mb manual .. that one long beep is dram error .

and i did mess with that a little

thanks for the info .. im on it

lol, aight. ya go reset it, and dont tweak ur ram unless u know what ur doing! most generic or value stuff cant really oc too well. keep ur ram in spec, and if u have more problems let us know, will do our best to help.

ok i think i found it ..

to clear cmos temporarily short 1-2pin

it looks like to metal prongs sticking out ..

what do they mean but shorting it ... thanks ...

or i'll just pull the battier

ok, what they are saying is, when u put the jumper in the spot they tell u to, itll short a part of the mobo that resets the bios. sould be 3 prongs. say there in order like 123. and the jumper thing is on 23, then put it on 12 for a few secs, and then put it back on 23. not neccisarily those numbers , but same shall be applied.

ok still workng on jumpers ... but i did cycle the battery for 30 seconds and its still beeping
.. guess thats a bad sign

maybe i messed up my ram ... i think in the guide i was following one of the timings was different .. and i changed mine so that may be the problem ...

just so i know im on the right page with jumpers

i though the were little tiny swithes ... but what is see is two metal prongs sticking out

they dont look like switches

found them in book but im going to serf net to get alittle more info on them

Take a screwdriver, and connect the two prongs with the metal tip. This will complete the circuit and reset the CMOS. It does the same thing as putting a jumper there temporarily.

it there anything i need to do in bios ... after reset

im glad u got a laugh out of it .. i crapped my pants lol

if you ever overclock too far and the computer won't boot again, try holding down insert as you turn on the computer. this will load bios's "optimized defaults" for just that boot. from there you can change back what you changed, and prevent having to completely reconfigure the bios :p

ya, when u reset everything gets set to the stock shit. should be fine, but u may wana check it out

question?

i have to correct clockgen for nforce4 working now

is this considered a big jump

i was shooting for a cpu speed of 2.6 on my amd 4000

if i bump up the htt from 200 to 217ish i get there .. now clocks on memory, pci also rise

or i think i can change the multiplier from 12 to 13 (does this only overclock the cpu)

i read a lot just trying to put it together ... what road give u better performance usually ...

i got a fire extinguisher sitting by my cpu this time ....

well .. with clockgen i can take multiplier of 12 .. and when i run prime95 with fsb at 217 i get and error ...

a64's are locked upwards, so you can't use anything above stock (12x)

and if you follow my oc'ing guide, you'll figure out what you're supposed to do with the ram speed. basically just drop the ram divider if you're worried about the ram going too far out of spec.
as for the pci-e(?) bus.. i guess set to 101mhz, though it should be locked anways.
and to get to 2.6ghz, you may have to bump up the cpu voltage a notch or two.

i did read your guide .. and thats whats helping me figure this out

so if i lower my ram to 166 then when i over clock it will end up close to 200

sometimes i have to play a little with this stuff before it sinks in ...

ok i played with it .. and here is what i got

i lowered my ram to 166 (shows 160 in cpuid) and tried
fbs 217 which gives me about 2.6 mhz .prime95 still gave me an error so it probably not the ram because it was clocking around 170ish

i did try upping the voltage from 1.5 to 1.525 but that didn't help ...

finally, clcokgen lets me adjust my pci-e bus .. how does that effect my video card

hmmm, well the prime95 error is most likely from the cpu being pushed too far for how much voltage you're giving it. either back off a bit, or increase the voltage some more

also, changing the pci-e bus will simply change the trasnfer rate of data to and from the video card.. but that's kinda useless as it's already way more than enough, just keep it around 100mhz

well i put the fsb at 217 .. and i guess that what pushed it over

voltage wise stock is 1.5 and i bumped it to 1.525 same thing happened

.. now i have it running stable at
fbs 205
cpu 2461
mem 205
multi 12

probably not a noticeable difference ...

thanks for your replies

oh shit dog, most people stop at a htt of 203 , cant believe u hit 205  ................ :D

u werent stbale at 217 eh?

lol told ya, gota take your dram ratio down. change its max clock from 200 to 166, then oc to about 240 htt and itle just about be stock w/ ur cpu flying. so ya put ur dram max at 166, then start clocking up.

heh heh dangit, i wish i was right next to u to do it for u heh .

well with clockgen and not using anything else ..

i was able to get max
cpu 2497
itt 208
ram 208
multi 12 .. which is default

no errors with prime95 and bf2 demo works fine

i did lower my ram too 166 but prime95 gave me an error at 217 ram was 170ish and i did bump cpu volts from 1.5 to 1.525 and samething happened

is 208 to high for ram in general

motherboard monitor doesn't seem to be working right for me
it says case is 25
and cpu is -16

but if i go into bios right after loading cpu .. temp are around 48c

so it runs at 217 w/ ram in ratio, but your prime gives u errors? bump a the core aobut .05volts when u get unstable/errors, maybe bump up chipset down a notch. also, take down your hyper transport multiplier down a nothch, say from 5 to 4 or from 4 to 3. should work.

also, as a rule of thumb, andything below 10% is un noticeable, so u gotta at least hit 220 htt bucko ;)

it did not run stable at 217 with the ram turned down to 166
and i boosted the voltage from 1.5 to 1.525 and prime quickly game me an error

one thing i still need to understand

in clock gen it says my multiplier control is a 12

how is that different from hyper transport multiplier (my mother board calls it .. ht frequency.. i think) .. which is soon to be set a 3x ...

there are a few items im still trying to figure out the relationship on ....

i understand that 12 x200 = 2.4 mhz cpu

but where does 3x fall into the picture .....

im going to read the oc sticky again becasue i think it said something about that ...

ok. u got the cpu equation right. but, what u do is, take the yout htt x 2, then times that by that multiplier. thats the frequency your cpu talks to the rest of your system minus ram. 3x multi should work. ok take it back to 217, and 1.55v or 1.575v, then try it

set in 3x and it wouldnt boot ....

my battery is taking a rest ... im put it back in later lol

have a problem with boot up know it gets stuck at boot from cd ... bois has been reset

reinstalling windows
hope this fixes my problem

well i tried to reistall window with out wiping files on hard drive
didnt work

boots up to

boot from cd: ...

do you have a cd in? ;)

and never boot into windows unless you know it's stable.. just not worth the risk :p

hot damn lol, i dont really know wtf is going wrong w/ ur pc. i think u should spend an assload of time researching then aproach ocing. the thing is, right now ur doing trial and error. not good obviosly. and me attempting to show u step by step taint workin.

well all i did was change the ht to 3x and reboot

it wasn't over clocked ... was going to try to

but now when it boots this message comes up in bios

nvidia boot agent 201.0462
copyright blah blah nvidia corp
copyright blah blah Intel corp

PX -E: media test failure, check cable
pxe-mof: exiting nvidia boot agent
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
end of message

and before that is does this message

nvidia raid ide rom bios

detecting array cd drive name

press f10 to enter raid setup utility

end of message

i check cables they look ok .. i did move by them when i took out battery

and when it boots .. i think it said primary slave and my hard drive name but doesn't now

and i tried a full install of windows but that didn't work either ... it did reformat disk but when it booted same massage

well thats where im at ... might take hard drive out and have some do a test on it ..
