Overclocking in Crossfire, do both cards overclock?

I'm not 100% on this, but I'm fairly certain that the cards automaticly match clock speeds. So, if you overclock, both cards will be running the same speeds.
I dont think thats the case anymore. If you have a XTX and a XT in Crossfire, the clocks will remain the same. They dont match up. I think they did with the X850 Crossfire, but not now.
For SLI I had to do some coolbits editing to get both cards to overclock at the same time. Otherwise, only one did. Im debating on flashing both cards, or just overclocking. If I cant overclock both cards, Ill probably just flash.

Overclocking Crossfire can be done (talking from my experience of X1900XTX & 1900CF).
There are two methods I use, the easy and the downright ugly.
The easy method is using CCC Overdrive. Simply unlock the tab and raise the core and memory to the allowed max clocks (690 core / 800 memory). This must be the XTX being overclocked here, don't know what the CF edition card is doing but most probably stock clocks.
I use the easy method for normal day usage. This is because the fan control is adequate and raised when needed, noise level not too bad if you use headphones while you play. Temps are high (70C) but non threatening.The settings are stored and loaded at bootup.
The ugly method is using ATI Tool beta. Overclocking with ATI Tool gives better returns and the cards can be overclocked independantly. However, it's fraught with problems and since the saving of profiles doesn't work very well with 2 cards, should never be relied upon. It is a free beta afterall.
The more you overclock with ATI Tool, the more you need to raise the speed on the fans, unless you are water cooling of course. To me, both fans at over 60% is intolerable, the main reason why I use the easy method until I can water cool these cards.
There are a few threads on using ATI Tool (their forum for one) so I'll gloss over the finer details.
- Disable the two ATI services using msconfig
- set fan speed for card 1 (you will hear the fan spin up of 1 card)
- confirm fan speed for card 2 (you will hear the fan spin up of the other card)
- set voltages for card 1 (this is the voltages the card use in 3D mode)
- confirm voltages for card 2 by clicking on a slider and clicking apply (I do this because sometimes the voltages are not copied from card 1, much like the fan speed).
- set core and mem clocks for card 1 (card 1 is the crossfire master)
- set core and mem clocks for card 2 (card 2 is the XTX)
That order is common sense. You raise the fan to control the heat produced, you set the voltages so the cards don't crap out when you raise the clocks.
Until the issue with 2 card profiles is fixed, you have to do this each time XP boots up with ATI Tool in the front seat. If you don't, you run the risk of one of those settings not being loaded. On one occasion after bootup the fan speed wasn't loaded for the CF card, and was stuck at 9%. Needless to say the core temp reached 106C before I checked the temperature by putting my hand on the card. Yes, it was that hot! If ATI Tool could display the temps, speeds and voltages of both cards on one screen, it would be sweet.
Last overclocking with ATI Tool I did recently was 725/882 on the XTX and 670/792 for the CF at 75% fan speed. My best so far on stock air cooling @ 100% is 729/891 for XTX and 670/801 for the CF, but I was deaf for 3 days

I prefer to configure the resolution and detail of games so they are smooth throughout, rather than have the peak and trough behaviour you see on review graphs.

Yeah, 24". Ive had the 2405FPW since the first week it came out. It has forced me to upgrade often.
edit, well I seem to have a problem. ATi Tool is telling me that my video card is not being used in Windows. It then tells me to enable my monitor for the output of the card. Which it already is. Im on x64 if that matter.

Seems I had an older version. Download it on accident. Got the newer version, working fine now.
Its showing 0.00 for both mem and core default speeds though. It also shows active pipelines, 8. Something isnt right. I have not disabled the two ATi services with msconfig though. I see one, clie.exe. Also, I dont see the fan control, I must be blind. Im on version .24.

It's not the cli.exe in applications you want to stop, it's ATI HotKey Poller and ATI Smart in the Services tab of msconfig you want to disable. Remember to have ATI Tool load at startup too.
I've got an issue with CoD2 where it simply wont run when ATI Tool is used to control speeds. Not looked into it too much yet.

Ok, I did that. But it is still not showing my clocks. It shows 0.00. And I cant find the dang fan control. I just dont have it. There is no drop down like the rest of the options.

Bummer. Looks like you'll have to wait for a new bios for the mobo, a new beta of ATI Tool or perhaps new CATs. It shouldn't be long.
I'm waiting for the DFI version of 2x 16PCIe, then I'll have all the isues of that board to iron out like I have with the RDX200!
