Overclocking impass with a e6750???

So i've currently have the system as described in my signature. I'm quite happy with it, but lately could use a few extra hundred mhz from my cpu (e6750). I'm currently only at 3.0ghz all at stock voltage. Which i think is pretty sweet especially for longevity. I know these babies overclock pretty easily to 3.2/3.4/3.6 ghz on the norm but am really having trouble getting it to anything above the 3ghz /1500mhz bus barrier even when bumping up the voltage.

Here are my current voltage settings on my asus p5n32-e sli plus mobo (which is a sort of hybrid 650i/680i chipset):

cpu core: 1.350
1.2: 1.25 (1.24 actual)
NB: 1.35 (1.34 actual)
SB: 1.55 (1.53 actual)
cpu VTT: 1.35 (1.36 actual)

with these settings i can get 3ghz / 1500mhz bus unlinked with my ram at 800mhz

When i've tried 3.2 / 1600mhz bus unlinked ram @ 800 i've done everything i can think of from bumping the NB/SB/CPU core all up. The limits of what i've got to was 1.45 cpu core and 1.5 NB and 1.6 SB and 1.4 cpuVTT, always unlinked. This fails me everytime whether its 3.2/1600 or 3.4/1800 etc, if i try odd numbers like 1666bus it offsets my ram to like 798ish and fails to boot. Furthest i can go is get windows loading then it will either freeze while its in windows after a few moments or freeze at the login screen.

My temperature readings are always around:

37c cpu
(core 1 38-41
(core 2 37-40

gpu 47c

I have aftermarket cpu and gpu coolers, as well as a rather large copper heatsink/pipe on the NB/SB that came with the mobo, as well as heatsinks with my OCZ reaper ram. I have two exaust fans on the top and back, and three intake fans on the sides (2) and front (1). I'm very comfortable with my cooling and dont believe overheating to be an issue. So now i turn to you guys, Any help/suggestions? (i really dont plan on upgrading till i can get my hands on a 6core i7)

p.s. my computer is always clean and free of dust as i clean it every month or two max.

try pulling out some of your ram modules and try again.. its harder to overclock with 8 gigs of ram in all four dimms.. requires way more voltage to the northbridge

I've been running 440 FSB @ 1.50vcore stable for nearly a year now. Give it more vcore. I never had to mess with my NB/SB voltages. Just keep pumping up vcore til you hit 3.5ghz. Although I wouldnt go past 1.55 personally.

I can't get it any higher than that 3.52ghz barrier though...I figure its the motherboard. Or my unwillingness to mess with NB/SB voltages. Using 2 DIMMs vs 4 will def help.

thanks guys i'm gonna try that and report back with the 2 less DIMM's and more vcore with same NB/SB voltage!

You should use 1:1 divider for the ram, for overclocking testing at least. If your FSB is 250, your ram should be DDR2-500.

Dividers can make ram unstable, so eliminate that as a cause.

Ok, so i took out 2 of the DIMM's and was able to boot into windows at 3.2ghz/1600 bus :D
The voltages were all stock, i noted them and they were the same as my original post.

I put back in the 2 DIMM's and it didnt work. So i bumped up the cpu core voltage all the way up to 1.55 (i was a bit scared i must admit). Still no dice. It seems that the NB does indeed suck up way more voltage with the 4 DIMM's populated. I put all voltages on auto, and used a cpu vcore of 1.4875 (i think that was it, if not super close to that). It booted up perfectly and i'm at 3.2/1600 as i type this. Thanks a bunch guys!

I am a little worried about how high some of my voltages are on auto mode however, they're as follows:

cpu Vcore 1.48 (this is fine)
NB: 1.54 (this is the one i'm worrying about)
SB: 1.54 (normal for my board i believe)
cpu VTT: 1.46 (slightly high but i'm not too worried about it)

My cpu temperature is pretty much the same, but of course the NB is pretty hot on the touch of the heatsink, and the SB luke warm. I've considered replacing them with an aftermarket heatsink but they're attatched to each other via a heatpipe and i think if i hear the ok from you guys i'll just hold off on that.

Thanks for your previous help, i'm now 200mhz faster per core (400mhz faster! :D) i know that doesnt sound like much especially with a lowely e6750 but i'm certainly happy. Thanks again guys! ;)

p.s. As for the 1:1 divide that would run my ram at 1600mhz and not 800mhz wouldnt it? (it lists 1600mhz if i change to 1:1 and simply wont boot at all so i have to unlinke it and run it 1600bus/800ram) My board is pretty finicky i've read and does best when OC'ing in unlinked mode, even if thats not preferred

Seems to me like you should be able to squeeze a bit more out of your chip than 3.2. Or at least back off vcore to like 1.44 or so and keep it at 3.2 . My NB and SB are at 1.25 and 1.06 respectively. VVT is 1.2. RAM voltage is 2.1.

I'm on an ip35-pro though ... so my board might need more or less voltage for some things than yours. Have you tried messing with the ram a bit? ... what modules are you using?

Yah, I built a friend's rig with the IP35-Pro and he's at 450FSB with no probs

I've heard un-good things bout how far you can push your Asus P5N32-E Plus board

Intel chipsets (P35+) just seem to like to play faster and better ;)

the e6750 is supposedly a good chip to get to 3.6, but I haven't been able to get mine there.. 3.2 is a very nice spot to keep it at I think, just back off the voltage a little bit; closer to 1.35 should be about right.. it doesn't need anywhere near 1.5 to stay stable at 3.2

1.35v to get 3.2? damn. I mean ive never tried to get it to run at anything below 3.4-3.5 but below 1.48v my rig becomes unstable. I dont think the voltage will harm the chip so long as your temps are good. My idle temps are roughly 30C as reported by everest. I see maybe 50C under full load. If you pop the chip at least its an excuse to pick up a quad on the cheap ;)
