hi there all.

I am about to start experimenting with an overclock on my i7 860 CPU. I am going to aim low to begin with, say, 3675mhz (21x175). My question is what voltage should I apply to the CPU ? Further, what is a safe/reliable temperature for the i7 860 range of CPUs ? I have a Coolermaster Hyper 212 with a low-speed NExus silent fan fitted on it and it idles around 28c at the moment.

What voltage should I try for 3675mhz that gives me the overclock I'm looking for without substantial risk to CPU life and high temps ?

Maximum safe voltage is 1.5V, and the maximum CPU temperature is 100C. You should try and keep things below 90C to leave yourself some headroom. However, for your target overclock, you shouldn't need anywhere near that much voltage or run those kinds of temperatures.

Just raise your base clock to what you want it at, see if your PC will post, and if it does, boot into Windows and run a few runs of IntelBurnTest or LinX to check for stability. If it fails, add a little Vcore and repeat. If it passes, run a longer stress test and see if the overclock will last. If not, add Vcore, rinse and repeat. It's not too complicated.

When you say I should add a little vcore, what would I raise to from default voltage as first attempt to hit my target overclock ?

Anything below 4Ghz shouldn't require much of a voltage bump. Everyone's chip is different, but as a ballpark, you should well below 1.40vcore at only 3.7Ghz. Probably be best if you got some advice from another i7 Lynnfield user though...since HT adds some heat for your chips.

Steps of 0.05V would work for starters. Once you hit your final stable overclock, you can fine-tune it a little more.
