I setup my new machine yesterday and decided to use the predefined overclocks.

In the bios I went straight to the pre-set 4.8ghz and after 15 minutes on Prime i got temps of 74 84 84 82. Pretty high and CPU-Z reporting volts were at 1.44.

I went into the bios and cpu volts were set at auto.

Is is wise to go with a pre-set overclock?

A little bit too high temperatures for Prime. IBT would fry that CPU. I would definetly start lowering the volts until you find the sweet spot. Auto overclocking tends to overestimate the stable voltages badly. My overclock is 4.7ghz with just 1.33 CPU voltage for example, but what is stable for you varies from chip to chip.

The auto overclock typically changes the bus speed too. I would change back to optimized defaults, change the multiplier only, and try that, then let us know.

will do when I get home, cheers.

4.8GHZ pre-set seems like a high speed for an instant OC feature. Are there higher pre-set speeds?

How high can you go if you manually over clock? This main board looks very nice. I almost bought one.

4.8 is the highest iirc.

Gona start ocing now

Your temps look hot to me. Be careful. I think Intel Burn Test is a great way to test for stability. I'd try IBT at 4.8 to see how stable it really is.

Considering his highest temps are 84C with Prime, that would be bad idea cuz IBT tends to produce 5-10C more heat. That would bring that 2500K to dangerous levels! Thats why I recommended to take those voltages down first and finding out the lowest safe CPU voltages to get those temps under control and that is still Prime stable.

Attempting to overclock:

Set the multiplier to 47 and cpu voltage to 1.405.

Seems stable so far with temps at 58 67 67 65C

However, CPU-Z and Realtemp show the multiplier is only 40. Why is this?

BIOS settings probably have something throttling the cpu. Check your BIOS over and look for a setting.

Decent voltage and temps. Much better than before.

Turbo Boost Power - Manual
Short Duration Power Limit - 250
Long Duration Power Limit - 250
Core current Limit - 250

Setting the values above CPU-z now showing at x47.

Also I havent been able to get it stable at 4.8 but when I chose the preset, the system was stable but quite hot.

I've left it at 4.5 a decent cpu voltage for now.
