I have decided to overclock my Geforce 6600 GT to increase the performance in The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. I was going to change the GPU from 500mhz to 560mhz, and the RAM from 900mhz to 1020mhz (From an optimization guide apparently from the Elder Scrolls forums) , but this is my first time overclocking and I'm unsure about a few things. Is Coolbits my best bet, or should I use another application? Is the stock fan and heatsink adequate enough to handle the overclock? Are there any other dangers I should know about, aside from the obvious? I've also upgraded to the NVidia Beta Forceware Drivers 84.25, which I've been told are optimized for Oblivion. Any experience with overclocking this particular video card would be appreciated. Thanks.

System Specs:
Athlon 3000+64
1gb pc3200 ram
MSI K8 Neo motherboard
Geforce 6600 GT 128mb AGP

Ouch, not good to pick your OC before you do it ;)

Overclocking varies between all cards. In the nV control panel, hit "Detect Optimal Frequencies" to get you a nice, stable, OC.

^doesnt coolbits have a "detect highest stable settings" type feature as well? i havent used it in ages so i cant remember, but if i recall, i thought it did. and should OC it higher than the nVidia tool.

^^^^^ Is right, you have to find out what your card can do, not decide what you want to overclock to.

As far as what utility to use, I use RivaTuner for graphics cards, but tbh, the features I like may not even matter to you. Coolbits will accomplish what it is that you're looking for: a simple, quick overclock. 6600GT's are generally not a very hot card, so the stock fan ought to be alright. When I had my 6600GT, I had roughly the same settings you're going for and it was stable with the stock cooler.
