Overclocking for the first time

I'm a total newbie when it comes to overclocking, and I had a few question regarding how to do it, safe temp levels for OC'ing, etc.

Look at this post for my build. I'm only using air cooling. I haven't purchased any fans yet (I haven't even received my parts yet), but I would like to know if any of the stock fans in the case or the HSF would be adequate for OC'ing. I'm not planning on OC'ing to, like, 5GHz, but I would like to play around with different settings to see how well it works.

Do you guys have any suggestions on how to start or what I should try first?

Get Realtemps, and do not let cores get much above 70c after 10+mins of Prime95 and you should be fine.
 
use intel burn test instead of prime95. and run one of the 3Dmark benchmarks as well 2-3 loops. when stress testing i'd say try not to go over 80C since the odd's of you actually reaching those temps in every day usage is pretty slim.

as far as stock cooling goes, i'd go as high as you can on stock voltage and thats about it. invest in a much better high end heatsink if you want 5Ghz.
 
Thanks for the tips. Yeah I'm not really comfortable with going as far as changing the voltage.

Even before I get to overclocking, should I buy an after-market HSF? I've read that a lot of people recommend the Coolermaster Hyper 212+. Would it fit my case/mobo? It looks pretty tall.

Once I get that sorted out, how should I go about OC'ign the cpu? Should I increase the speed by .1GHz, run stress tests, rinse, repeat? Or should I OC larger amounts until I BSOD, then lower it?
 
While it's probably not the answer you are looking for, my advice would be to seek out one of the many previously written overclocking guides out on the web. You've spec'd out an 1155 board, but I don't see a specific CPU. You can start by looking for some of the i5/i7 OC guides, and try to search for guides written for your specific mobo (it helps to find a guide written for the bios you are going to be adjusting) or CPU. If you're lucky, you might even find a guide or some posts for your mobo/CPU combo.

While there are many very knowledgeable and helpful people on this board, in my experience it is not often you will have someone hop into a thread and re-hash overclocking all over again when the information is readily available elsewhere, especially for tech that is a few years old.

Again, my best advice would be to do a bunch of reading. The better you understand what you are doing, the more likely you will be able to adequately troubleshoot any issues and come out with a successful OC. Good luck.
 
Ah, actually, that does answer as few of my questions. I've purchased an i7 2600k.

You make a very valid point, one that I (mistakenly) had not considered myself. I'll search for some guides; are there any places in specific I should look that have more reputable knowledge?

you really don't need to rehash that much on an lga-1155 system when it comes to overclocking.

since he's building an lga-1155 p67 system he can only use K series processors. which means the cpu multiplier and cpu voltage are the only things he needs to touch. so its just trial by fire.. raise the multiplier til it fails.. raise the voltage til it passes. raise the multiplier til it fails again, raise the voltage til it passes again.. pretty much go back and forth. or find a starting voltage that you like then raise the cpu multiplier 1-2 steps each time til it fails then either raise the cpu voltage or lower the multiplier til it passes again. 1x multiplier = 100mhz.

My bad, got my chipsets mixed up and thought that mobo was for the previous i generation.

sirmonkey1985 is right, overclocking the new K processors has gotten much less complicated.

no problem, have fun with the easy overclocking, was about time intel took a page out of AMD's book with the black edition processors and started releasing the K series processors that were actually affordable.
 
Just quick fyi, since everyone already pretty much said stuff. Stock heatsink keep it Stock voltage. Keep eye on temps like mentioned during stress testing and you wont break it. Its virtually impossible to fry cpu with stock voltages. When you get into voltage increases thats when it gets exciting.
Only one ive ever fried long time ago was Amd 64 3400+ I was just tiny past 4000+ specs with way to much voltage... added just tiny more voltage to get it stable n bam lol off I was to newegg to buy a 4000+ lol.
